Before renewing your SIN, you must first obtain a valid work permit; once your work permit is renewed, you can update your SIN through Service Canada at NO cost. Since your refugee hearing has not yet started and you are not in the appeal stage after a negative decision, there is NO processing fee or open work permit holder fee required for your work permit application.

As far as know, if am mistaken correct me.
Thank you for your help. So do you know if I should apply for a new one? Or extension? Knowing that my current work permit expired on December 2025, so 5 months ago.

My first renewal, I applied in April, received the WP-EXT letter within 2 days, but nothing since then. It seems the background check is in process and the timeline is still within the 127 days as mentioned on the IRCC processing time. Unsure if having my PR application processing in parallel would affect this.

The work permit extension application shouldn't take this long. It's not such a complicated process. My first two work permits were approved within 3-4 weeks. I did 3rd application in this july.

I wonder why is my timeline longer than others, I know contacting them won't speed up anything.

Do we know if anyone out there experiencing a similar processing timeline for their WP renewal?

My one friend applied in june and got their work permit 6 months later. I've heard of a few people like that. This is totaly unfair.

Wondering if "first time renewal" made a difference here.

While it won't speed things up either, you could try ordering GCMS notes. They don't always reveal anything, but it's possible a careful read might reveal a potential cause.

Yeah... the other thing that came to mind is perhaps the current OP just got unlucky and hit the tail end of slow processing/backlog, whereas now they seem to be prioritizing new applications first.

I think, like in my previous application, those that are approved within 3-4 weeks are approved by AI. The others go through manual review.
