Hello,

Background Information:

My wife is sponsoring me for my PR but she is still a student and has no work experience.

She lives in Quebec but planning to move to Ontario.

The only thing holding her off on moving to Ontario is this application. Moving to Ontario would mean she would have to proof she has an income to support me.

Here is the thing, I have been working part time in the states for years now while I was working on my degree. I graduated in the summer and now working full time. I have an income here in the states and could show my tax returns and bank accounts.

Question:
Can I show I could support myself with the money I have saved in my bank account? or should I transfer this money to her bank account but even then, would that be enough to show she could support me?

Also this might be a question no one knows yet, but in the new forms, looks like they don't make any distinction between Quebec and other provinces when it comes to proof of income, anyone noticed this? so now in the new forms, you would need to show proof of income even if you live in Quebec?

Note:
Right now, she is just thinking on not moving out of Quebec until the application is done. Reason she wants to move is to actually get a job and pause school for a bit. Also we would get a place for ourselves, even tho I can only visit her on weekends (I'm 6 hours away). Since her french is horrible, she has not been able to get a job in Quebec and she just hates it over there. She was born in Quebec and everything but her parents put her on English schools and she was never interested on learning the language.

Any help would be appreciated!

hi,
I'm not sure where she's getting this assumption from, but there is no income requirement for sponsoring a spouse in ANY province. A sponsor does not need to be employed or have an income. in the application, you will need to convince immigration it is not likely she will apply for welfare upon your approval. this can be done by showing your savings or letters of support from family in canada. Sponsors are rarely rejected because of not having an income. There's no reason for her to not move to ontario because of the application.

as the applicant, it is not necessary to show your tax information, only hers is required. immigration needs to see she has not used welfare or filed for bankruptcy. if the sponsor application specifically asks for proof of financial means for supporting the principal applicant, then your financial information can be put in there, if necessary. it may not be necessary - so go by what the application requests.

there is no income requirement for spousal sponsorship, so there wouldn't be any distinction between provinces. the only difference for quebec applications is that there is an extra step during the process for the CSQ. This does not need to be done upfront, immigration sends a request for it further into the process.

applicants and sponsors should be submitting the information requested in the applicaiton. if an application requests some proof of income, and there is none, there is usually an option to provide an explanation.

I'm in a somewhat similar situation. My wife is sponsoring me, and she has a relatively low income. As stated previously, there is no income requirement, but it's a good idea to provide evidence of some kind that you won't have to go on social assistance. I did the same thing that you're talking about, sending in a copy of a recent bank statement showing savings. We didn't get any questions from Mississauga. AOR came 9 days after the app was submitted and SA 5 days after that. I think you'll be fine.

How much money you showed in the bank account. and was it a joint bank account? or it was her bank account or yours?

Thank you.

Thank you.

It was my account and it showed upwards of 40,000 USD. I wouldn't worry too much about the exact amount. Like I said, they don't have any cut-off number. All you have to do is prove that you'll be supported when you get to Canada. That could mean staying with in-laws even.
