Hi all,

My Fiancée (Canadian citizen living in Canada) and I (US citizen living in the States) are planning on getting married next summer and then applying for spouse sponsorship, she had brought up applying for Alberta Child Health Benefits to assist her with her children's dental work since she is low income right now. I have no dependents of my own so I know she would not have to prove her income to sponsor me but would it effect her ability to sponsor me after we are married if her children are receiving assistances but she isn't herself?

I don't understand - surely if she's not living in Canada and the children aren't yours and aren't PRs themselves, they simply aren't eligible?

Although no set income requirements for spousal sponsorship there is a requirement to be able to show you can support a spouse financially without government support to sponsor. That said whether your future spouse’s children qualify for Alberta benefits now won’t directly impact your sponsorship. It will also likely depend on their father’s income not just their mother’s.

Ok, she doesn't receive any other type of government support, so that's good to know thank you.

Depending on how low income she is it could still be a problem. If she has additional savings (or you do) or you have an easy pathway to employment in Canada or a job lined up that is probably worth mentioning.
