My family got PR in 2005 and we landed in Toronto. We lived there for 15 months and then went back to India. We returned to Canada again in 2009 in Vancouver. We applied for PR renewal in March 2010. In Jan 2011 i was informed that our file was transferred to local office and we were required to furnish all details again, which we did immediately. However, we haven't heard back from them yet. Online status does not show anything. Call centre is also not telling any thing. Now we want to visit USA as well as India for some urgent reasons. How can we get back in Canada after US and Indian visits ? Someone told us that (1) For US: We can show our landing papers on border while coming by road or rail (2) For India: apply for entry permit to came back to Canada. However, I wish to confirm it to be safe. Please advice.

Yes, this is true, if you are driving, you can enter on your landing papers but if you flying, the airline wants to see something (PR travel document) to know that you will be allowed to enter Canada.

It sounds like your PR card renewal is going to residency questionnaire. Were you just over the 730 days?

Thanks for the reply. We are just about over 730 days. That's right. However, I learned that (1) it is difficult to get US visa for such people whose applications are pending for PR renewal in Canada and (2) if you go to India, chances of getting PR renewal are slim. Is that true? Any comment please?

1) I don't know. Do they ask to see a PR card for US visa?

2) They should look at how many days you have in Canada in the past 5 years and if it is still more than 730 in the previous 5 years counting from the date you apply for the travel document, they should give it to you. They could however choose not to believe you (based on you having RQ for your renewal perhaps) and so they might deny you the TD and you will be stuck outside Canada for a while trying to appeal for it.
