The situations is as follows:
Applied for PR card renewal (the original card expires on June 27 this year) in December 2009, has been approved in February, the letter asking to pick up the card was received by my family in Toronto 2 days ago.
I am overseas now and originally I hoped to receive the new PR card before I left Canada in February.
Is it possible to wait till I finish my course of studies and return in Canada at the end of August? In this case, should I apply for
Travel document (as in August my current card is already expired)? Or I must go to Canada before June 27, and there is no way to postpone it?
Thank you.

Ask one of your relatives to go to the local office where the card is being held and ask what happens if you don't pick it up on that date. Maybe they can hold it longer and re-schedule the pick up date.

If you are outside Canada with an expired PR card, if you are visa exempt, you wouldn't need anything to go to Canada although you will likely be stopped by immigration and have some grief about not renewing your PR card in time but if you are not visa exempt, an airline may not let you board the plane without ensuring that you have some documents allowing you entry to Canada. In that case you would need a PR travel document. You can apply for that at the nearest Canadian embassy.

For anybody else who is applying for a new PR card early hoping to get it before they travel, write a letter with your application telling immigration when you are planning to travel. If they don't know you are leaving, they will time the pick up date of the new card to the expiry of your old one.
