Mine says we are reviewing from start of march but nothing yet ....:-(

My wife's and my current work permit expires March 23.

We've done our medical exam on 15-JAN-2018 and got "passed" on it two weeks later.

I'm looking for alternatives to NOT renew our work permits (saving CAD$500!!!) as our PR is literally turning the corner.

Does anyone have any thought to share about this?

I think you have to renew your permit .
When you will go to do your landing you need to show current permits.
