My PR Landing Experience ;D

Hi everyone, how is it going? I did my PR landing today (Feb 3, 2016) at the Emerson-US border (Emerson is one hour away from Winnipeg and is the closest one there is). I started from my place at 10:20am (A close friend gave me a ride and made the journey all the more enjoyable) and reached the border at around 11:30am. We drove straight to the US border first and stopped in front of the window. The lady officer was very pleasant and asked us how we are doing and the reason for entering the States to which we answered good and I told her that I was there for PR landing. Seeing my upbeat answers and smiling face, she even started smiling and said and I quote "someone is happy today". lol. She asked my friend to park the car and asked me to come inside the building. I did as instructed and when I entered inside the building and towards the counter, the male officer asked me in a gruff voice what I am here for? I explained that I am here for PR landing and he went inside to get my passport from the female officer. 2 minutes later, he came back and asked me to wait for 5 minutes while he prepared me the rejection letter. So i sat in one of the many chairs and noticed that the actual building is huge with a high raised ceiling. The floors were made of marble and polished. The entire office was grand, like really top notch and well-kept. So after 5-6 minutes later, the officer came out, called my name (and was smiling and much more communicative than before). He asked me to verify the document if everything was typed correctly and free from typos. I never thought I would say it but "My rejection letter was perfect". lol. Then he escorted me out of the building and opened the gates to go to the Canadian side of the border for the next step. While he was accompanying me out to the Car, we were chatting about the weather, greeted each other "Happy New Year" and he congratulated me for becoming a Canadian PR. So we waved him goodbye and drove to the Canadian side.

The Male officer at the window had a pout on his face and gave me an impression that he just attended a funeral. He asked my friend a bunch of questions about bringing firearms/furniture/goods into the country to which he has replied "NO". Then he asked me for my passport, the rejection letter that I have received from the US border officials, and gave them back to me along with a yellow sheet (rectangular shaped) on which he wrote something related to COPR. Anyway, my friend parked his car outside and waited in the car while I marched forward into the office. The office is just one floor, very depressing to look at, totally opposite to the US border office. Like literally. There were three male officers (one in his mid 50's, two in their mid 30's) and one female officer (late 30's). The guy called me forward and asked me why I was there to which I replied, PR landing. The next question he asked was "Why didn't your friend come inside?" to which I replied that the officer at the window said that he can stay in the car if he so desires and he said Ok. He then asked for my COPR, Passport, all previous Study/Work permits (to shred) and I politely gave them all to him. He asked me the couple of questions - Was I ever convicted before and if I have any dependents - to which I wrote NO next to each of the questions and signed my initials. Then he asked me to sign my COPR as well, which I did. He then gave me a sheet to read which has all the "rights of a new Canadian PR" and asked me to wait in the seating area (which had 5 chairs) and that he will call me as soon as he's ready for me. One other Asian family were waiting before me (and working with a different officer). I waited for like 10 minutes and then I was called. He stapled my letter to the passport, told me that it's important to keep the document safe (in case if I ever lose my PR card, this document is needed to re-apply), read my rights and responsibilities, told me that I had to wait for at least 8 Weeks for my PR card to arrive by mail and to update my SIN after I receive my card, gave me a Canadian flag and Congratulated me. He warmed up a little to me during the second part of our interaction. So I waved him goodbye and walked out feeling much happier that this "feeling of waiting forever" nightmare has finally come to an end.

We drove to a nice restaurant in that little town and I gave my friend a big treat for being there for me when I needed him. That was my way of saying thanks for his time and support. I asked the waitress (her name is Frances) if there are any nice thrift stores around (I am a big sucker for lost treasures) to which she drew me a map. lol. After lunch, we drove to the MCC thrift store (literally on the next parallel street) and I got a beautiful ceramic ladybug plate for $1.25. That was my treat for being a good man and waiting patiently for the past two years. Sometimes we just have to splurge you know? lol. Then we drove back home to Winnipeg and reached around 2:15pm.

It was a good experience and a great day, overall. At the Emerson border, I found out that the US officers were sweet and polite while the Canadian officers were a bit dead inside (I could imagine why, working in a depressing office like that) but I think they are entitled to display a tougher image to everyone. Since this was one of the most happier days of my life, my spirits were soaring high and I smoothly bypassed the attitude of the officers as if I was swatting a fly :p.. If you have any questions, feel free to let me know..

Drinking to all our PR's.. :-*

Cheers

Ha ha ha... I hope you are out of the hangover by now!!
One of the most detailed account so far. Thanks for posting it and congratulations for the last step.. Its over for a good period of time. Enjoy now :)
I have received my passport back with immigrant stamp on it :) Will travel to Coutts next weekend. I am planning to drive to US. Anyone know if it changes any doc requirement, of course I have the US visa.
Thanks Vsw ;) I am glad you enjoyed reading my landing experience.. I was cheering for all of Us in terms of new PR's. Its a figure of speech, I wasn't really drinking. lol ;D :p

Congrats to you. It doesn't change anything. You will be taking the same documents - COPR x2, Passports (old & new - most importantly the one that has your US Visa stamp), all your new and old visas and permits (they will ask you for these to shred), drivers license (especially since you are driving).. That's all you need to carry.. Good luck with your landing. I'll be waiting to read your experience soon. :)

cheers

Oh boy the Winter is brutal. I live in the far north in Thompson, Manitoba. That's 8 hrs drive from Winnipeg. Extremely cold...-35 to -40 is just a regular temperature here. Our city has about 13,000 persons...and a Nickel mine....Vale.
Reidy, look me up when you are planning to visit Winnipeg sometime in the future. We can have drinks or lunch together. Find me on Facebook if you are there (Kaladhar Battepati) or simply send me a PM here to track me down..

Got my passports back today!!!

Passport sent on Jan 22, received by CIC on Jan 26 and returned today.

I am an inland applicant from Ottawa. Planning to do landing at Ottawa office.

Does anybody has any information about landing at Ottawa office?

All i know is that you dont need an appointment, its walk-in and only open on even Tuesdays of the month.

Please do reply if you have anything to add to this.

Got my Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) and went to the border last night!

Ottawa received the copy of my passport on Jan 28th and CoPR was sent back Feb 3rd.

Since my last work permit was expired and I was living and working in Canada as "implied status" I opted out to do my landing at the border. I could not wait to get an appointment at immigration office close to me.
Below is my landing experience. Hope it is useful.

Drove to the border around 10:30PM. Went straight to the US customs and told the US immigration officer that I was here because I have Confirmation of Permanent Residence from CIC. They said to come in while they issue me a "Refusal document". This took about 5 min. Then they told me to turn back and go back to Canadian customs.
Canadian customs asked why I was here. I told the officer that I was here because I have CoPR. She asked me why I did not go to the nearest immigration office. I told her that my permit has expired and could not wait to get an appointment. She told me to park and head into the customs building.
Inside the customs, I was greeted by another immigration officer. He asked me if I was bringing anything in and if I owned any weapons. I told him no which he asked me to write the answers on CoPR and initial. Then he told me to wait while he process paper documents. This took about 10 min. He then asked me to sign CoPr one for customs and another one was stapled in my passport.
The officer explained to me that it would take about 8 weeks for PR card to arrive and congratulated me on becoming a permanent resident.
The whole landing experience was easy and straight forward!

2years and 3 weeks and constant worrying... finally I made it:)
Thanks to everyone on this forum for sharing your experiences. Good luck to all of you.
If you have any questions feel free to ask

I can't believe that they're still telling people this. Even though the times have come down to 73 days on the website, it was as high as 110 days not very long ago. So even on the low side that's 10 weeks.

My advice is to avoid booking any travel plans for at least 4-5 months if you can.

Oh, and congratulations of course. ;)

Thanks Quink!
Now I asked the officer what would happen to me if I need to travel outside of the country.? He said that because I am from a country where I do not need a special visa to get in the country I should be fine to travel.
Just FYI for those thinking and planning to travel outside if Canada

I think you are right, but only until March 14. Then from March 15 even from visa exempt countries PR card will be required (or eTA if visitor. Not sure for temporary work permit holders).

Congratulations to kaladhar and all others forum-mates on becoming Canadian PRs..and thank you to all ..I was away for a bit ..

....Here is another question to explore possibilities and read your thoughts on .......

@ -1- anyone who got PR card recently ? If yes, then how long it took for you in getting it ..and what was the time frame the days you became PR ?

2- these days it show 105 days which mean three and half month ..and may b taking 15 days to reach by mail ..my question is ..I became PR on 29 Jan 2016, calculating the current 105 days to get PR it should b around 15 May 2016...but I am travelling in first week of May 2016...which cannot b delayed at all ..I don't know what should I do ...and it is so hard reality that I need to b in Canada before 25 May 2016:-( please share your exp and what would you do if you were me ..
Thanks a lot

That depends on your rental service provider. They can penalize you for doing that. And US border agent may also give you heck for it.
