Passport request if living out of home country on a working visa?

Howdy all!

Ok,well we just sent our application off last week.
We applied Outland through the London office (I am irish).

But after reading through the forum here I've seen that they will eventually request your passport?

Now I'm really worried about this.
Since I wasn't allowed to work in Canada,we both decided to come live and work in Australia on temporary work permits until my PR is processed (which hopefully it will be!).
I am worried about what will happen when they request my passport?i can't really send my passport to London and be left in Australia on a temporary working visa with no passport?pretty sure by law you are not allowed to be here on a visa and not have your passport with you....what if I send it to them,and still do not receive it back and my visa here expires?

Can anyone shed some light on this for me,I'm really worried!

If you're applying from a visa-exempt country, they DON'T request your passport, just a copy of it. I am pretty sure Ireland is a 'visa-exempt' country.
