@wolfpack27616

A couple of questions regarding the requirements for an OCI and the surrender certificate in regards to a mailed-in application:

a. Is self-attestation required for the documents that have been photocopied ?

b. Do we have to submit the original naturalization certificate AND the Canadian Passport along with the Indian Passport ?

a. Yes- follow the BLS Instructions
b. In my case, they just collected the original Indian passport (and self attested copy) and COPR (and self-attested copy). I Submitted self-attested photocopies for everything else.

Edit: It looks like for some they've requested for original Citizenship certificate. In my case, they did not.

@wolfpack27616 how do you get the acknowledgement for OCI - is it by email ? I am wondering when I can start tracking it online on the OCI website.

You would get it via Purolator. I had submitted my OCI and indian passport surrender at the same time. So I got 2 Purolator packages (cancelled Indian passport/surrender certificate, original COPR and OCI acknowledgement)

Question regarding a postal application for the surrender certificate and OCI (Vancouver consulate):
According to both checklists, there is no need to submit original Canadian citizenship certificate and original Canadian passport, only photocopies of those. Can someone who applied to Vancouver please confirm that?

Hopefully someone from Vancouver jurisdiction will answer soon. In my case (Toronto), I submitted only self-attested photocopies of Canadian Passport and Citizenship certificate.

Anyone who applied in last week of feb from toronto got your originals back? I have applied 3 weeks back and havent got any info other than "Processing at consulate"

I applied my baby OCI on Feb 20th, received the originals on March 6th. From March 6th to now BLS tracking still says " Original documents Dispatched via courier"

We are vacating our condo on March 31st to travel India. Hoping that we will receive by March 31st.

I think I got the originals around 10-14 days after I got my passport/surrender certificate

I applied for OCI on 14 or 15 March. Today tracking shows that consulate has dispatched originals to BLS. Reached BLS around 3.30 and collected the same. Now only need to go once more to collect the OCI card and saved my $ 160 .

OCI website says "
Document received At TORONTO"

But in BLS website purolator tracking number is not updated. Can I walk in bls Toronto and ask for the OCI?

Wait for a day or two for BLS to update the status.

Hi friends, we had test/ interview yesterday and were told oath will be in May or June. I need some info.

My son is travelling to US for one week in second week of May. His tickets/ hotel booked and not refundable. If we have the oath after his return date- no issues. But if the oath is scheduled for a day shortly before his travel date what are the options for his travelling as the trip cannot be rescheduled?

  1. Should we ask we rescheduling the oath? if do so will it be delayed a lot or just like 2 weeks/ 1 month for the new date?
  2. If we take the oath, there will not be enough time to get Canadian passport and travel using that (we don't need US visa with Canadian passport, that could be an option if enough time were there). So can he travel with Indian passport- I mean, since it is immediately after acquiring Canadian citizenship, any grace period for using Indian passport?
  3. Any other options/ suggestions?
Thanks in advance !!!

1. Oath can be rescheduled but noone can be sure when the next one would be .
Why don't you just take the risk and travel and if the oath email comes along and if the date is during the travel dates, you can ask to reschedule the oath .
2. Does he has a US Visa? You can still use Indian passport even after citizenship. Ideally Canadians should use Canadian passport for traveling back to the country, but I think you should be okay (others please weigh in)

Thanks. He has a US visa and he is planning to go with the Indian Passport as per current plans. What I understood from BLS website was that one should not use Indian passport after acquiring citizenship of another country (and if done so, there is some penalty etc..).That is why I was thinking that if oath is scheduled and done before travelling date he should not use Indian passport and he will not have enough time to get a Canadian passport. Are you sure that if we use Indian passport after oath there will not be any future complications from Indian consulate when we go to surrender it? Is the rule "should not use Indian passport ... " applicable only for travelling to India? But there is one more issue if use Indian passport- returning to Canada from US will be a problem since there is no PR card- I guess that will be taken back at oath time, right?
