I didn't realize that an oath in India (which is unlikely to happen anyway) would result in an immediate loss of Indian citizenship and render this person "stateless" and without official status in India.
Well technically not stateless, because they'll be Canadian once they take the oath... And yes, they will have no legal status in India once they take oath and need to apply for a Visa or leave the country forthwith

But yes, the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955 provides for automatic loss of citizenship of one voluntarily takes up another countries citizenship by swearing an oath or by registration or by other means as allowed by the other country

True, I had put stateless in quotes for irony. IRCC states that it could take up to six months for a citizenship certificate to arrive to a mission abroad, so I suspect oaths are conducted overseas (in exceptional circumstances) and people do receive citizenship certificates mailed physically to Canadian embassies or consuls. In such a scenario, assuming it takes 6 months to receive a certificate and another 3~ months to apply for and receive a passport overseas, the person could be in "no man's land" for almost a year - without status in India (and therefore removable on grounds of not being a citizen or without a valid visa) but also unable to leave without a Canadian passport.

Just FYI, it was easier to get through IRCC using French today... while English queue was closed. If you have conversational French, you can try both options

But as usual... there was no update and their response was, "Il faut patienter".

Some stats update as for May 2023:
Also, as of May 31, 2023 Citizenship backlog grew from 75,000 to 85,000... an increase of 13.69%

How long it takes to get the certificate and passport after oath. I have a travel plan roughly 4 weeks from the oath date. Is that enough to get a passport and travel?

Totally forgot I could use French for a shorter wait, but I've only called once thus far.

Weirdly, even with the 13.69% increase in citgrant backlog, somehow citgrant applications are the only ones remotely being processed within "service standards!" Now it won't be IRCC unless they pull some wool over our eyes: When you can't meet regular standards simply extend them haha! I'd like to see how the numbers break down for citgrant applications using a 12-month standard (aka prepandemic).

Hi,
Has anyone form Scarbrough's office gotten any updates for the oath ceremony? It's been 3 months that I haven't had any update on my application.
