Hi All,

My work permit processed by my employer shows NOC 2174 (Computer Programmers and Interactive Media Developers) and i want to apply for CEC in NOC 2281 (Computer network technicians). Does changing the NOC while applying will result in a rejection by CIC. Anyone who has done this and has faced any issues or got the PR successfully kindly provide your suggestions.

Regards,

Mokhsa80

I don;t think that matters. As long as your job reference latter has the duties which match the NOC code you are applying you should be good.

I would say go with the NOC that's mentioned in your WP. As a rule, you are supposed to work in Canada under the NOC mentioned in WP. If you work on anything else, its kind of illegal.

I have seen quite a few people getting rejected for this reason. Its not worth applying under a different NOC and going through all the stress while waiting for approval / rejection.

I agree.

If the VO checks the information on your WP and it comes to their attention that you have applied under a different NOC code, it might bring up issues. Also, I don't understand why your actual job duties differ from the NOC code stated on your WP. Were you meant to work under NOC 2174 and instead ended up working under NOC 2281? That's a significant difference. One is NOC A and the other is NOC B.

Well when i applied for WP, my company told me to select the things i knew from the programming language, and i selected. They applied on my behalf under NOC 2174 (Computer Programmers and Interactive Media Developers). Now the NOC mentioned in my WP is not there in CEC. But 2281 (Computer network technicians) is there and it exactly matched my job duties. Hence confused what to do next.

If you did work contrary to the conditions on your permit (an LMO is tied to a specific employer and occupation) then this is unauthorized work, and it's likely that the work experience will not count.

The good news is, they now do a basic assessment of work experience at CIO, so if they do refuse your application there's a chance they'll just send your application package back and you can get a refund.

What? NOC 2174 is definitely eligible for CEC.

Yes, I agree. Go ahead and apply under 2174. That's your best bet.

Yes, the employment letter should list your verifiable duties and responsibilities as close as to 2174 as possible.

Okay. Well, if your actual job duties vary signficantly from NOC 2174, then it will be subjected to further scrutiny by the CIC VO and they can ask either you or your employer to provide more proof. What's more concerning to me is that as LPS stated, the work could be unauthorized and actually not count towards your CEC experience.
At the CIO office, they will check if you're applying under the ineligible occupations (which you are not, I presume), if you have submitted language test results. As per MI-10 these are some of the checks performed at the CIO Office. The conformity of the work experience to the NOC code, is not checked at the CIO Office. If they do and find significant differences and decide to refuse your application for processing, at least your fees will be refunded.

Well basically, my role is a that of a Content Management software Administrator. Hence I basically do the following work, some of these match with points mentioned in 2174 as below

Maintain existing computer programs by making modifications as required
Identify and communicate technical problems, processes and solutions
Assist in the collection and documentation of user requirements
Write, modify, integrate and test software code for e-commerce and other Internet applications
May lead and co-ordinate teams of computer programmers

And from 2281 Computer network technicians I perform the following

Install, maintain, troubleshoot and upgrade Web-server hardware and software
Implement network traffic and security monitoring software, and optimize server performance
Perform data backups and disaster recovery operations
Conduct tests and perform security and quality controls
Perform shell scripting or other basic scripting tasks

So not sure what should be done in this case.

It sounds like you're in a small company doing a range of IT stuff, and you don't have an official statement of duties, but your boss is able to provide you with one that pretty much sums up what you do and is in agreement with NOC 2174. In which case, I would emphasize the software development aspects of your job and not the admin stuff.

So basically i can still apply for NOC 2174 (Computer Programmers and Interactive Media Developers) and they will accept my application. Because on the site www_cic.gc_ca/english/immigrate/cec/applications-accepted_asp i could not find NOC 2174 and that was primarily the reason i thought that i need to apply under NOC 2281 (Computer network technicians). Apologies for all the confusion, i am newbie here.

You mean http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/cec/applications-accepted.asp

NOC 2174 won't be listed on that page because it's NOC A, and therefore not subject to the sub-cap of 200 applications.
