@ NThompson,

Hi there...great job you're ding in this forum. Couple of questions please. I recently applied for the FSW 2014 scheme and got my MR.
I applied as a HR manager. I have a masters degree in HR from the University of Liverpool, UK and a professional HR certification from USA. Gt about 6 years full time HR experience too.
In order to prepare for the canadian job market...would you advice getting canadian-specific certifications? Though i am somewhat confident my current qualifications should help a bit...what are your thoughts?
Hello Meme,

Sorry for the delayed reply but I hardly check back here as often as I used to :(

To be honest you will be fine with your current qualifications and experience. This might sound abit harsh to people who are not from the UK or have experience and qualifications from the UK but Canadians highly look up to us and you have that on your side you won't need to do any additional certifications from Canada as that won't really benefit you much unless its a requirement.

I see tons of HR positions going over here as well so you will be fine. The moment you open your mouth and say Hello my name is ..... They instantly fall in love with you and you lol.

Also its sad to say but I thought Canada was high on qualifications so before I moved over I did a bunch of courses and guess what........ They favor experience over certifications here and a lot of the jobs will state a certification but if you have 2 years and above experience its a big chance you will land something. So certifications over here is not as important as you may think specially if your from the UK

Update

Just to help motivate people but I recently got a higher position in the government as a Manager. I have been in the country less than a year and through this internship program it has really opened doors for me.

The key to it is "Network" once your inside talk to as much managers and staff members as possible get your name out there.

Hi Thompson,

I am not sure if you're familiar with the industry but... What advice would you give to someone that wants to get into management consulting in Canada? I am interested in how to get in touch with the right people (if possible), what requirements consulting firms (big or small) consider etc. I'll appreciate any info you feel is relevant.
Thanks

Go to indeed.ca
Look at the top and click on 'Find resumes'.
Then type in search box the title of position and city/province.
Lots of resumes there to view.

I also in past posted job adds on my own (yes, I actually paid a fee and posted a job that I didn't have to offer), in order to have a better understanding of what I was competing against. Just copy pasted, edited and created an ad for a typical job I applied for , to see how many people with what qualifications apply for jobs I was looking for. Cheap price for a real time information that you can't google.

Thanks S7,

My colleagues and friends keep telling me that I need a LinkedIn account I will make one once I'm in I will for sure add you.

Two people from my ministry got hired through LinkedIn and they was not even looking for a job.

Also if anyone is interested one of my colleague who got hired at Cancer care said there is a lot of positions opening as they are opening new units and they pay really well.

He also mentioned that it is a really nice multi-cultured environment.

Hello next2015

Sorry but I have no knowledge in the consulting firm at all :( Sorry I could not help but I'm sure someone on here might have some information on that.

I can ask around at work to see if any of my colleagues know of any firms or had any experience with any.

I do wish the best for everyone and feel free to ask questions or if you have had any positive experience yourselves.

Hi nthompson,
Thanks for sharing your experience. Can you give me any idea of getting a job if I apply job from outside Canada after getting PR? And also for applying paid intern at Career Edge from before landing?

Thank you :)

Thanks Vish. I just want people to feel motivated what I have experience. If it was not for my wife motivating me and keeping me on my toes I honestly doubt I be were I am.

If you have any questions or anything feel free to ask and I do my best I can. While working here I have met at least 12 interns who recently moved to Canada and all got hired after their contract ended.

The position is nice. One thing I can say Canadians don't work as hard as us immigrants. I love the Canadians but their very laid back

Hello KK80,

I would not recmmend applying from outside of Canada until you land as they will not be interested because most of these jobs are instant.

Please don't ruin your chances and apply now because they will just put your application in the Not interested pile. Wait till you land then apply.

I'm thinking of posting a template of a Resume and cover letter to help people with getting interviews. I'm not an expert but I have learned how to customize my resume.
