My medicals got extended and still in eligibility review, awaiting officer review. Security not started yet. Looks like extending medicals really doesn't mean anything more than that. May be redo medicals has more chance for quick PPR.
same situation.... medical just got extended for a year but eligibility is still review required....

My medical was extended after 2 months of getting expired, after contacting MP and his investigation it was clarified that security is still in progress.
I am about one year under security check.
What could be the case with extension of the medical?
Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Hi Everyone!
According to the ATIP request, my spouse (who is outside Canada) had his medical extended in March 2025 until March 2026. It’s been two months since then, and his file is still under security check. I’m feeling a bit confused. Would the medical be extended because they need more time to continue with the security check, or is it a sign that they are nearing finalization and want the medical papers ready? Has anyone experienced something similar?

It was assessed and extended because it was expired. Either had to extend it or request another one. It’s unrelated to processing time.

I've noticed that many people have had their medicals redone, but in our case, they were extended. I've also read on this forum that some people have had their medicals extended and have been waiting for months. Has anyone contacted IRCC or submitted a web form regarding the medical extension while waiting for security screening? What typically happens next after receiving the ATIP? Now that I know the medicals are extended, I'm wondering what comes next. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with a similar experience. Thank you!

When did you apply for spousal sponsorship and what is your spouse’s citizenship? Medicals tend to be extended for younger people who had no medical issues during their first medical. They are unlikely to have major medical changes in a year. Spouses being sponsored do not face the same excess medical demand rules as most other immigration pathways. The only thing IRCC is concerned about when it comes to spouses are communicable diseases. You need to separate the medical extension from processing they are not related. The extension of the medical was just procedural and has not impacted the processing of the application. The application will continue to be processed and you appear to be waiting for the background checks to be finished. It is impossible to say how long this may take. A lot of sponsorship processing timeline has to do with the applicant’s profile, their citizenship, whether they are being sponsored to Quebec, etc.

We are Lebanese. His application was submitted on September 6, 2022, and his file is still being processed by CanadaVisa Lebanon. All other requirements have been completed, except for the security check. The last update was in December 2024, which was also when his medicals expired. His medicals were later extended in March 2025, now valid until March 2026. I believe the security check has been ongoing longer than necessary.
