Marriage, sponsoring, and having a baby in Canada

Dear All,

I hope this is helpful and generally wish everybody a great weekend.

I am in a bit of a dilemma and wish to get a clearer idea of how we can have a clear idea of the immigration process.

I have plan to get married to my fiancee in the near future (less than a year). I am Canadian and she is Mexican. As of right now we are going back and forth to Canada and Mexico. Within the next 1-2 years we're planning to fully reside in Canada and ensure she becomes a Canadian Citizen. We also are now working on having a baby right now (predicting it would a bit less than one year) and would prefer for the baby to be born in Canada.

So overall, what do need to do to have a baby in Canada without her having not pay for the charges.

You won't like this advice, but here it is: Wait to have the baby.

Does she a TRV for Canada? Which province do you live in?

With the information you have provided, there is currently no way for her to get healthcare in Canada. There is no process to bring a fiance to Canada as a PR and citizenship doesn't occur until after PR.

First, you will need to sponsor her for PR (Permanent Residence). If you've lived together for a year or more (with proof, of course), you can apply now as Common-Law. If not, you'll either need to live together for 1 year or get married. Those are your only ways to sponsor her right now.

Depending on the answers to the questions I asked, there might be more/better information available. However, as of right now, if she's admitted into Canada to give birth (I'm under the impress she as a TRV based on what you said above going back and forth) you will be paying the whole bill. You should be aware, the IO can deny her entrance into Canada if they feel she's going to stay and give birth without healthcare and/or the cash to pay for it.

thank you for the information. So far from what i see you need to have at least a PR status to get any benefits. I guess would like to know if it is possible to get married and to have a baby with the her having the benefits in 1 year.

Her Visa wont expire anytime soon. The Province of Ontario is where we are planning to live.

Not 100% true. Alberta gives healthcare to a dependant spouse of a resident with proper legal status in the country. I'm a visitor in Calgary and I was added to my husband's Healthcare the day our marriage certificate came. That's why I asked which province you were going to.

Have your wife check with her embassy for ideas. Also, try contacting some different midwife associates. Sometimes they will do it for reduce cost. Midwives are already cheaper than the hospital. However, the downside is if there is a complication, your wife will end in the hospital anyway. The midwife won't hestitate the call the ambulence if things are beyond her scope or become life threatening. (Safety first, always good when a life is at risk.)

For Ontario, shew will have to qualify as a resident - meaning the 90 day waiting period before getting healthcare. If she's already there on a visa for the 3 months before hand, I don't know what OHIP will say (I obviously don't know as much about OHIP as I do Alberta, but I will ask someone else).

However, if you do an Inland application (where she doesn't leave Canada), there are sometimes Healthcare benefits. I will PM someone from Ontario and ask her to review your thread.

Ontario will not give any health coverage to visitors. I'm not sure how much the birth would be without OHIP but if an ambulance ride is 100 bucks, I can only imagine how much birth would be.

However, planning this ahead, you should also keep in mind that if you were to use that clinic but your wife has complications and has to be taken to hospital/ have a c-section, you will have to pay.
