it depends upon when you search and what are the dates of your travel, right? I haven't see any hard or fast rule for any specific airline to be cheap.

I found Lufthansa to be cheaper but again it depends on the dates of your travel, time of the year and how many days/months before you book your ticket.. Lufthansa is good until Frankfurt and from Frankfurt to Toronto you fly Air Canada since they are part of start alliance.

One more thing, in my personal perspective, I have been traveling a lot for so many years and I thought the food served in Air Canada was crap!! I took a spoon and left it as it is although i was so hungry that I waited for another 2-3 hrs before they served a sandwich which was just about ok to satisfy my hunger and that I had not other choice but to put food in my system to re-energize myself...

In case of Air Canada, there is only 1 piece of free baggage allowance?

If your flying Lufthansa from anywhere in India you are allowed two pieces of baggage, so even if you are switched over to Air Canada the two baggage allowance continues

01 May to 31 August could be the peak airfare period to Europe and Americas. Then again from mid- December to mid-January the rates will go up due to Christmas-New year travels. If you are prepared to choose their date and travel on the special offer period published by airlines, you could get somewhat better rate too. For comparisons of rates of various airlines from India to Canada check the websites of yatra.com, makemytrip.com, goibibo.com or cleartrip.com. Better avoid any flights going via USA.

Thanks to all of you for useful information. Anyone has any experience with Air India/Air Canada combination via London.
