Nope you need a Valid PR card or PRTD to return back unless you are from visas exempt country .
Unless you hold a valid U.S. passport, you can probably only re-enter Canada at a land PoE in either a personal/private vehicle, or on foot.
It's not that CBSA requires a valid PR card (because they do NOT), rather the commercial carriers require this, or a PRTD, to return to Canada.
PRTD then I suppose. There are no instructions on how to apply for PRTD from Canada, if I want to leave say Aug 1 and return Oct 1.
