I'm not sure if I am posting in the right spot, as this is my first time. I'm writing on behalf of a family member who moved here in Alberta at the end of February 2019.
He is here on a 2 year LMIA. When he arrived here, he went to the border to get his work permit. At the time he was only given a 1 year work permit, they said they could not issue a 2 year permit because his passport was expiring before that time.
He is now coming up on expiry of that work permit. He has gotten his passport renewed. Can he get his work permit renewed/extended for another year to line up with the duration of the LMIA/.
The reason I am asking this is that someone told him he cannot get the work permit renewed without the employer getting another LMIA. Does anyone know if that is actually the case? Could he simply renew his work permit with the existing LMIA that still would have a full year remaining? I would really appreciate any assistance that people can provide. Thanks in advance.
