The sky just opened up. We've had thunderstorms all weekend. Thursday, we drove to the edge of the city to see the lightning over the plains.

The good news is the clouds move fast over this part of the plains (usually) so it doesn't last long.

I spoke too soon.... http://ca.news.yahoo.com/calgary-hit-flash-floods-heavy-rain-013430797.html

Dear Forum mates,

I heard from one of my friends in Toronto that Alberta doesn't provide any students loan to new immigrant unless they live in Alberta for two years. :-X :eek:

I am planning to move for Calgary but if we couldn't get any loan it would be hard for us to further study.

I don't know whether this information is correct or not.

If anyone know regarding this matter please let me know. :eek: :eek:

Regards,
GTL

@Amikety.....

@->->-

We all wish GOOD LUCK to calgarians...

Thanks a lot Amikety, by just putting words and answering questions based on your knowledge and available time you are helping a lot to people who desire to avoid wrong turn in their beginning phase of Canada landing and settlement. I can give you +1 ratings for your kind gesture ....

I am a Mechanical engineer with a wife (B SC microbiologist) and one half year old son. I am from GUJARAT, INDIA.

Dear Amikety, like everyone, i wish to know something about Edmonton and Calgary, CA. I am putting my questions below, please try to answer it by your knowledge and exposure. Basically it is comparison between Calgary and Edmonton.

In which city there are better chance to get job in relevant field after some time? Till I get job in my relevant field, which city can provide me Survival job sooner ? I know it is depending on one's effort and luck a lot, but I expect general inputs from observation through your tenure of stay in Alberta.

I will be the only person who can earn money for my family, to survive there. Will it be possible to carry out expenses on survival job initially ?

I wish to know, in which localities new Indian migrants are living for Edmonton. I also wish to know which are affordable communities from it with easy of public transport as I will not have any personal vehicle to commute if I choose to be in Edmonton.

Which are popular real estate agents for different Indian communities ? How much they charge for their service ?

Is it any helping organization which can help to arrange some initial stay ( like for 15 days ) ?

Which city is better for initial settlement (means finding survival jobs) between Calgary and Edmonton ? Which city (between Calgary and Edmonton) has better field related jobs for my sector of work ?

I expect your time to answer my queries, and I would like to appreciate your kindness for a society in which you don't know anyone. It is big thing....

GOD BLESS YOU for your work and me for this courageous decision.

Regards

Okay, I'll try to help you the best I can. I don't know as much about Edmonton as Calgary (although my husband has lived there so if you decide on Edmonton, I may bother him for you :p).

1) Thank you for your kind words :) My brother is an electrical engineer and his wife-to-be is a microchemist! How funny is that? She is from Vietnam and he is from the USA.

2) Honestly, if you want to make the biggest impact as an engineer, go to Edmonton. Get your Canadian certifications and maybe a little education (such as PG Diploma). Edmonton needs engineers badly. The weather up there is awful. And I mean, awful. It's cold and dreary year round. My husband, who was born in Canada, hates Edmonton with a passion and refuses to ever consider moving there again. However, they pay very well for engineers and are more likely to give you a chance to get into your field (instead of being stuck in survival work the rest of your life - the dark side of immigration). What if you hate Edmonton? Stay there and work as a engineer for 2 years, then move somewhere nicer. You'll have your Canadian experience behind you and ready to live somewhere a little warmer!

Not to say you won't find an engineer job in Calgary. It's very possible. I just feel, based on my research and news articles, that Edmonton has more opportunities for newcomers.

3) I don't know about neighborhoods in Edmonton. If you decide on it for sure (after my moving statement in #2 :p ) let me know and I'll bother my husband to see if he knows.

4) For real estate agents, honestly, I would wait until you have a job (not a survival job, a real job) to buy a house. By that time, you are working with other professionals and get word of mouth references. Word of mouth references are very good and you can also check the internet for reviews. I would also interview several agents before signing any agreements. Give it some thought and pick who you are most comfortable with, who seems to care about your needs and understands them AND your affordability. Since agents are paid on commission, some are very greedy and only care about selling you the most expensive house they can find. Personally, the house I live in now is being sold, so I've had my chance to meet dozens of agents (no one wants to buy this crappy place). I've kept the business cards of several that I liked so when we buy a house, we already have a few to interview.

But, wait to buy a house. Unless you have enough cash to pay it off 100%, don't buy it yet. A survival job won't pay enough for a house payment and living in most cases (especially if you wife isn't working) and it will eat up your savings.

5) I have never used this service, so take my post with a grain of salt

http://www.centrefornewcomers.ca/living_calgary.shtml

I have used this service - it's for women only, so you wife can sign up and make appointments. They also offer social programs where she can meet other immigrants and they offer English classes (or at least, they used to).

http://ciwa-online.com/

Lastly, obviously I've never lived in Edmonton, but I googled newcomers and found this website from the city: http://www.edmonton.com/moving-to-edmonton/newcomer-services.aspx Hopefully it is useful - I don't know for sure :D
