Thanks for the answers.

I have no clue which city will be best for me and googling helps only to add more confusion.
I am Computer science Engg. with working exp of 7+ years[SAP] in 3 countries from the same firm. Please let me know which according to you can be the best city for me to land in order to have baby and find a job so i can stay 6 months.

Please advice me... it will be really helpfull.. I wish i land for a good life rather than in trouble for medical help and job. DO advice
If you dont fear cold, then go to Calgary OR Edmonton. Alberta is full of jobs, specially technical jobs.. Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical or IT. Market is good so far, you can try your luck here in Calgary..

Any idea where should i stay so that i have best area to stay, i will be landing with no job in hand. DO need to move into a house before i apply for SIN, PR card and Medicare or is the hotel address good if i stay there for a week or so..

Hotel is fine. You could also look for a short term room rental - more private, less noisy, and less expensive than a hotel. Many come furnished with a bed, dresser, etc.

I would avoid the edges of the city - try to stick with something central so you're closer to everything. That way if you get a job on one far side, you won't be living on the other.

Hi mysthetic, since you look like you are very knowledgeable about calgary in this forum, I would like you to help me if you can with this.. What do you mean by Alberta is full of jobs specially technical jobs? I am mechanical engineer with +5 years of xp in oil and gas working in the project management department. The only issue about tha xp is that only a year and a half is international job with English as a business and Main language. Can I start applying for job positions without having the SIN and the driver license ? Im Planning to land in may This year. any other recomendation will be welcome and appreciated.

Thanks in advance

You can apply, but don't get your hopes up. Most companies won't hire foreigners without a SIN. You might have better luck in Edmonton or even further north than Calgary. The colder it gets, the less people want to move there.

My application was mailed today. Woohoo. Only another year of waiting now.

Hey Aquib,

For a newcomer, how much is auto insurance in Alberta?

This poster said it's $8,000 a year in Ontario:

My husband pays about $2,000 per year and he has to have full coverage because the truck is under payments. He's by himself on the policy because I don't have a driver's license in Canada. He also hasn't had any tickets or accidents in the past five years.

Guys with Oil and Gas are really wanted here.. some of my cousins (Project Management, Cost Controllers, Mechanical) in this field and they are having some good time. My elder brother (Electrical & Electronics) applied in CNRL last month and he got selected and going to join the company from 21st Jan at Fort McMurray. Although he was a Canadian Citizen since 2003, but living in Pakistan since 2008.

I have not idea about your current immigration process status.. if its in final stages, you can apply.. You will be asked for the SIN after joining the company. So thats no problem.

Hi,
Thought this is copy from Internet , I found useful to understand Calgary road maps.

Local: Navigating Around Calgary

Context Sensitive Search:

Address or Building:

The names of Calgary's streets follows a number of simple conventions:
[ Quadrants | Building Numbers | neighbourhood Names ]

Quadrants
The city is neatly divided into four quadrants: North East, North West, South East and South West. The quadrants are included at the end of addresses as NW, NE, SE, or SW. The downtown core is mostly in the SW quadrant. The dividing lines are along Centre Street between the east and west, and Centre Avenue between the north and south (this line continues along the Bow River and Memorial Drive NE).
[ Maps of Main Streets [ Dtn | NW | SW | NE | SE

"Streets" run North-South, and "avenues" run East-West. Most of Calgary's streets and avenues are numbered beginning at Centre and Centre. Those closest to the core have the lowest numbers. To approximate distance, it's about 10 streets to the mile or 15 avenues to the mile.

Building Numbers
Building numbers generally indicate the street and avenue numbers. To figure the nearest cross-street (or avenue) take off the last two digits of a building number. For example, 2425 17 Ave SW, will be close to 24 Street on 17 Avenue South West. Higher numbers (those approaching 2440) are close to the intersection, and lower numbers (like 2401) are closer to the next lower cross-street (like 23rd Street).

In newer neighbourhoods, where all the streets are named not numbered, kiss these rules good-bye.

neighbourhood Names
In some neighbourhoods all streets have a similar sounding name, forming a theme for the neighbourhood. For example, in the neighbourhood called "Whitehorn" all the streets begin with the word "White". When given an address in such a neighbourhood, the last part of the address (street, avenue, close, drive, or place) may be crucial for finding the address. In these neighbourhoods the building numbers often have no relation to nearby streets and avenues.
