My Interest is Instrumentation..Basically control systems..There is a demand for instrumentation engineering in Alberta. It is one of the most payable domain after Power Engineering,Electical etc. No i have not informed APEGA about it. I have never come across any information that APEGA doesnot recognise NAIT courses. Yes you need ASET if you are a technologist. If graduated from NAIT or SAIT you will automatically get 600 hours or somethng equal to that credits..So it will be easier to get tickets. But my plan is different. Wanna wrk some years as MIT and then get P.Eng.And the field i will choose is some thing related to Instrumentation. APEGA is giving its evaluation based on my previous degree.I hope it has nothing to do with what i am doing in future

@ Nandini, @ Ramzy,
Nice to see the conversation between u guys..
I am from Abu dhabi, basically from India-working in Abu Dhabi for mfg of Glass.I am a mech engg & have almost 12 yrs of expereince in Glass mfg. only.
Expecting my medicals at any time from now..
As I can see, there are no glass plants in Alberta whats yr suggestion for me for a job in mfg field.
From the Alberta Job market,I can see there are jobs in Alberta in mfg field but the question is how far we can go and fetch the job without P. engg. label at first instance. What do you think for us ..Is the further study a good option or to go for any survival mfg.or engg.job..
I can see that Power engg. is in very good demand. So any Idea how can we do that Power engg. course in Alberta having said that I have an experience in production and mfg of Glass only and not towards Oil & Gas or Utility/maintenance side?
Thanks & regards,
Edmonta

Thanks to the thread starter. Learned a lot about Calgary through this. Everyone who asked questions and got replies also helped me understand Calgary as an option if I get approved for FSW. Special mention to Amikety for the number of replies and being so helpful!

Dear seniors and members

I am planning to land next month (June 2013). Please guide me on below points:

In my CORP (landing paper against federal skilled immigration) Calgary –Alberta is written. Do I have to land specifically to Calgary or I can land any other Canadian airport?

Is it possible that from my home country I first land to Toronto than take Calgary flight and complete all my immigration procedure at Calgary airport?

Waiting for your guidance.
Regards

You can land anywhere - although I've heard Quebec gives you a really hard time. Landing in Toronto should be okay. You will have to land wherever your first stop in Canada is because Toronto - Calgary is a domestic flight, so no customs. In order to get from your gate from International - Toronto, you will have to pass through customs to get to a different terminal that does the domestic flights. No way around it unless you're also a superhero and can walk through the wall :p

You can give them a Calgary address at the Toronto airport. Even though you put Calgary as your destination, being a FSW, you could land into any city you want to live there (except Quebec). So if you decide tomorrow you'd rather live in Regina or Ottawa, you can go there instead of Calgary.

Anyone looking for a survival job -

Shopper's Drug Mart in Chinook Mall (61 Ave SW and McLeod Tr) is hiring for full time cashier and full time merchandiser. There was another job advertised, but my husband pulled me away (he was starving) before I could finished read it! Probably doesn't pay great, but better than no job! It is a nice, clean store and located in a nice mall, so at least it's in a good place. The train station (LRT) to Chinook Mall is currently closed (renovations) but it should open again soon, so transit is a good option as well. The LRT is only 2-3 blocks away from the mall.

Thanks for your reply.

Can you guide me regarding the personal assets declaration Vs Canadian benefits?

Is it true that if we don’t disclose the amount of our bank statement, jewelries, other wealth in the form (things to borrow latter) then whenever we bring them Canada, it'll be charged by tax rules.

On the other hand if we disclose our wealth (bring them first time or in list them in things to borrow) then we’ll be unable to get Canadian social benefits/relaxation (student loan, low wages benefits, etc..)

Secondly, if we want to sponsor parents again we need to have strong wealth in Canada.

How to balance this ratio?

Your guidance is really helpful.

Thanking you in advance.

I would apply online: https://prod.fadvhms.com/shoppers/JobBoard/SearchJobs.aspx?__SVRTRID=CFECF22A-EC00-448F-9C2B-66496A5ED63A

(That's jobs for all of Calgary.)

Then print several professional copies of your resume (and cover letter if you want to) and hand deliver them to the stores. Best times to go are early morning (1-2 hours of opening) in mid-week, say Tuesday or Wednesday or mid afternoon, same times. Avoid going during the weekends and evenings when they are trying to close. If the manager isn't in, you can try to talk to an assistant manager.

I once applied online at a store and their automated system rejected me, but when I took my resume into the store, I was hired on the spot by the assistant manager.

For cashier - if you experience cash handling (cashier, bank teller, cash office clerk) make sure to highlight that, even if it was years ago. A lot of places don't care as long as you have experience handling cash.

For merchandiser - if you have experience with planograms (that's directions to design and set merchandish on a shelf) highlight that. That was how I got my job above. I knew how to read planograms.
