hey all,
I have a question, now i soft landed and opened a bank account with no money and also issued a credit card that I didnt use. According to a lot of people including a cra agent on thr phone he told me I dont have to file taxes for 2019.
My question is, is it illegal not to file taxes if I am not a tax resident?
I want to be on the safe side and not mess with any tsx laws. If i want to file can I file for 2019?

CRA has already answered your question.

Yea i know but the agent at the first declined giving any advice on the phone but then he proceeded with asking and i gave him some information too then he said that to me. I dont know how binding it is.
Also i am asking because i want to be on the good side so i am just seeing if others filed if they didn't have to file, or does it matter if i filed or not if i dont have to

CRA has already answered your question.
Also scylla, if you remember you asked me to check with thre bank and they do actually have me as a tax resident om their file and this is because I provided a canadian address. I dont generate any interest on my account because it has no money does the bank file determine me as a tax resdient for the CRA? Because i asked the bank and their answers were unclear

As previously said, CRA has already confirmed you are not a tax resident.
Thank you canuck appreciated, so the bank status doesn't matter? I am really not aware of the legal bindings and even when i searched online and asked the banked i didnt get any useful info. Thry left it hanging everywhere

In general wouldn’t recommend people open accounts during a soft landing but CRA that you a not a resident for tax purposes. I would not recommend you start using any of these accounts until the year you plan on returning.

The accounts are empty and didnt deposit anything in them, not now and not before.
I am planning on transferring money to them two weeks before moving.
Should I cancel it and avoid the hassle
The bank told me that if i want to change my address they will let me attest to my tax residency status or something of that sort?
(My current address is my relatives address that I used to send the pr cards to) from what i undersntand is that I am OBLIGED to change my address when it comes to the CRA as its important but given I havent filed any tax return and hence my details are not with CRA i think its ok correct me if iam wrong
