Hello. I want to sponsor my common law girlfriend. I was convicted of drug trafficking when i was 18 years old, and served 6 months out of a 2 years +1 day sentence at a federal institution. I am now almost 32 years, and I am pretty stressed out because I don't know if i will qualify as a sponsor. Does anyone know if i can still qualify as a sponsor? If rehabilitation is the issue I can definitely prove that i have rehabilitated. I have went to university, held a job for more than 5 years, etc. since I got out of prison. But i feel like my past is haunting me. Any help will be greatly appreciated. thank you. Sincerely.

I can't give you a yes or no answer because I honestly don't know, but you will probably have a criminal record check done and I'm sure it's on your record so..that's a pretty serious offense man :(
I would maybe try to talk to an immigration consultant to get an answer so you don't waste time and money.

I'd avoid a consultant like the plague for a case of this type. I'd find an immigration attorney with bona fide experience in criminal inadmissibility and a decent track record - like one who had argued and won federal court cases in this area.

You're the SPONSOR?

Apply for a pardon. That will make your life easier anyway.

But more importantly, as long as this wasn't a domestic abuse case, you will be eligible to sponsor.

LOL yes definitely get a lawyer. Sorry Geek I posted right as you had just posted and you are correct, WAY too complicated for just a consultant

Yes I am the sponsor. Was going to get a pardon but than the federal rules changed for applying for one and now I cant do it until next September, which is exactly 10 years from when my my parole ended. Thank you. You have given me some hope.

When I first read it I thought you were the APPLICANT. After five years, an applicant has a chance of rehabilitation and from what you described if you were an applicant you'd have a decent shot. But once I realized you were the sponsor I deleted my original post - sponsors are only criminally ineligible if the conviction was for certain specific domestic or sexual abuse crimes (there's actually a list on the CIC website).

Be prepared for a longer than normal approval time, but in the end I can't see a statutory reason for refusing to allow you to sponsor. You've paid your debt to society and you've moved on with your life. Kudos to you.

Best wishes for you and your partner!

Thank you so much. Sincerely. I've been so stressed out about it. You've given me a lot of hope. I'm just going to be as transparent as possible and make it as easy for them as possible. Iv'e pretty much accumulated everything iv'e done since I've went to prison up until now, hopefully that helps. But once again thank you so much. And best wishes to you in all you do.

hey i was just checking to see if you had any luck with immigration and if they give you a hard time
Im going through similar thing man :( :(
