Hello there.

This is a very useful website, thank you for all who make our lives easier. I'm going to apply PR the end of this month as a common-law with my Canadian boyfriend and I have questions below:

1) As I've been living in Canada more than a year now, do I have to do the police clearance in Canada too? I got 1 from my home country already.

2) I want to apply an open work permit at the same time but I can't find it on the CIC web page, please help.
P.S. I have a tourist visa right now.

Thank you very much!!!

Dee

Dear

1- No you don't need to provide any police clearance from Canada. CIC itself will do it through RCMP, your Country police clearance will be enough.

2- http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/extend-worker.asp

Also don't forget to extent your visitor permit prior to expiry which will keep you in status.

Nope. CIC will order the RCMP background check. The only time they will ask you for an RCMP clearance is if there is some sort of match with your information and the information in the RCMP database. In that case, you will send in fingerprints and RCMP will verify the data they have against your fingerprints as well as your bio data. But that's unusual and not something you should do in advance.

You are "changing your conditions" so use this application: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/extend-worker.asp

These are generic forms, so any where that doesn't apply (e.g., the employer name) don't fill it in. CIC seems to do a good job of figuring these things out. Include the OWP with your inland application and you are covered by implied status.

Good luck!

I applied Outland - my work requires regular travel so staying in Canada for the duration wasn't an option. I received my COPR paperwork around 1:30 pm today (forwarded from my company's US offices) and a quick trip to the border had my executed COPR in my hand at 5:17 pm. Even the Vancouver rain couldn't make this anything but a terrific day.

Dear computergreek,

Sorry I thought you applied from out land, anw, congratulation to your landing...finally you got the happy ending :). I'm so happy for you ;)

My application was received on May 7, 2012 and I received the acknowledgement email with file number and UCI on August 31. So you should expect something by the end of this month.

Hello all!
I have good news. :) Me and my husband received email on Friday. I "It has been determined that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent resident
status as a member of the spouse or common-law partner in Canada class. However, a final
decision will not be made until all remaining requirements for becoming a permanent resident
have been met. These requirements include medical, security and background checks for you
and, if applicable, all of your family members, both in Canada and abroad, even if they are not
applying to join you in Canada at this time."

My husband: "You have met the requirements for eligibility as a sponsor....."
I didn`t make my Medical and my son is in Europe and he must also do medical.
My timeline:
APPL received : April 17 2012
Started processing : August 10 2012
AIP: Oct 12 2012
Have a nice week!

Second stage varies quite a lot. For some, it's granted right after AIP, for others it takes several months. The guideline says 80% will be done in 8 months. If you don't have dependents abroad being examined it will be faster. If you have any past issues (e.g., arrests or charges) it will be slower.

Hopefully you'll hear soon - that seems to happen quite often, with second stage DM in a very short period of time.

Thanks for your prompt reply! :)

THANK YOU VERY MUCH hamedsilent and computergeek!!!

As my tourist visa will be expired on 19MAR 2013. Do I need to extend my tourist visa at the same time as applying PR and OWP?

I am very confused because someone said yes and someone said no because it will be "Implied status" (If your temporary resident visa expires after you have submitted your application for an extension of your authorization to remain in Canada, you will be considered in status as a temporary resident until a decision is made on the application. This is known as an Implied Status).

Thank you again!!!

Dee

Hi,

Im not too sure but I have a friend who is working in a Laywer's office in Van, and when I ask him for extending my study permit (still valid until 2013), he said yes. He also said whenever you are living here, you have to be "in status", if you are "out of status", ur documents will be difficult!

You may confirm it again ;)
Good luck to you!

We received xxx's application for permanent residence on February 13, 2012.

We started processing xxx's application on September 27, 2012.

Medical results have been received.

Yipee! :D

I hope the second stage doesn't take too long.

Deedeedar

If your TRV expires next March. You do not have to extend it now. It only call for you to extend it about 30 days befor expiry. When you do apply, if you apply on line and have the receipt you are immediately in status. I sent my wife's extension away on September 17th and her TRV runs out on October 27th. We have heard nothing but that is ok because she is in status.
