I am trying to find out if we need to pay any types of taxes on a car we will be purchasing and importing to Canada.
We have landed and listed two cars in the moving items list. We have not imported any of the listed cars yet. However one of the older cars that was listed we will not no longer be importing it and instead we need to purchase a new car which would be manufactured in the US. We have not yet settled in Canada and still living in the USA. What is the best way to do this to hopefully avoid or pay the minimum taxes when importing the new car. Do we purchase the car now before we settle or it makes a difference if we settle and then buy the car from the US. We are US citizens and we now have Canadian permanent residency status and this is our first time that we will be settling in Canada. Thanks for any help on this

As far as I know you will pay all tax and duties on a new car you buy. Best to check with CBSA.

Be sure you fully purchase the vehicle as well, because you likely won't be able to finance it and move it to Canada, not many financiers are willing to sign off on the title for you to export it.
