I just put Alberta plates on my cars. Here are some to share:

1. Get form-1 from immigration officers when you cross the border;
2. Go to RIV website to pay the federal fees, about $200 per car;
3. Go to local registry office to get provincial check (in Alberta, at least) permit
4. Go to Canadian tire to do federal and provincial checks. For federal part, I need to modify 2 cars with daytime running light function, $300 each car; no other modification needed; for provincial part, $200 for each car. Plus you need to pay anything they find problems. My cars problem free, so no extra costs.
5. You pass the provincial check, go to local registry office with insurance proof ($350 per car for 6 months in my case), pay annual fee, and you get your registration and plates. DONE.
6. You must go to Canadian tire to do federal, not necessary to do provincial check there. But, their service is good, no conflicting interest seen, very honest. If you go someplace elsewhere, you may pay much much more such as in dealers.
7. each car will cost you $700 as a minimum (in Alberta) plus insurance costs and annual registration fees.
