Nice history lesson. I like the response beneath the article pointing out the overall "sense of entitlement" theme throughout this professor's editorial.

The comments for the most part seem to represent the status quo from my experience.

So now that apparently they're not focused on colour but it doesn't negate the fact that the wealthiest of the world have easy access to Canada. It's the new head tax. I don't think it's fair that a person with means can just walk in to the country while a hard working person of lower or middle class has to fight for it with just enough luck on their side. I would rather have a neighbour or co-worker who knows and appreciates the value of the opportunity they have been given then somebody who grew up with servants waiting on them. I just don't think Canada should be a place that you can buy your way into.

I think it will take a few more generations to rid our mindset of the remnants British elitism. I don't think the West has given enough credit to the advancements developing countries have made especially in regards to post secondary educations.
I will never forget the deep embarrasment I felt when I was served a cheeseburger by a guy in his mid 40's who was from Eretria. Educated in the UK and had a PhD in Geology. Moved to Canada to work in the oil industry and no one would hire him.

Wow, Eretria.

There's some countries (not the UK) that just don't have the equivalent schooling that Canada does. Looking at my partner's schooling - he started school a year later and finished a year earlier then I did. Then got a bachelor's degree in the required 3 years. My bachelor's degree was 4 years. I don't think that being a doctor/nurse/lawyer or whatever in your home country should necessarily guarantee you the equivalency in Canada. BUT there should be some way to make up for it without starting from ground zero again. I suppose every field is different.

It's certainly not fair but I really can't fault Canada for that. After all, a government's duty is towards the welfare of the country and its inhabitants; an immigrant coming in as an investor will bring jobs and money into the country (hopefully). On the other hand, they try to screen out people who might end up on welfare. This, of course, is not fair to the latter.

But think of it this way: if you were a landlord and you were screening for tenants, would you choose a tenant who has a 6-figure salary and looks like they'd never be late on rent, or would you choose the tenant who is dressed in tattered clothes and looks like he/she hasn't showered in weeks? In an ideal world, they would have an equal opportunity because you never know, the 2nd guy could be an extremely hard-working person who's fallen on bad times. In reality, I doubt many people would give the 2nd guy a chance. Oftentimes, this isn't because you're a heartless person; maybe you have a family and it wouldn't be fair to your kids to risk their tuition money by taking in tenants who can't pay.
