Hello everyone,

After browsing random threads, I made an upsetting realization. I sent my package in yesterday, it's supposed to arrive tomorrow.

I'm fairly certain I sent in the Notice of Assessment instead of the Option C print out. Had no idea there was a difference, apparently there is. Anyone have any idea what I can do? I'm going to call Immigration Canada tomorrow and ask what I can do.

I am terrified this will delay our process. :(

Any advice?

Thanks so much,

- Angel

I actually don't think there is a difference. When I called CRA asking for the Option C all I got was the last few years of tax assessments. Nowhere on the form did it actually say "Option C" or anything like that. As long as it was from CRA and had your financials on it you should be fine. On top of this, if you are only sponsoring your partner there is no minimum income required...is this the case for you?

Yes, I am sponsoring my spouse. If I recall, it was titled "Notice of Assessment" from the CRA and consisted of two papers stapled together. It said to include it to show I have never received financial assistance (welfare), but I did not see anything on the sheets regarding this.

I am worried I will have the application sent back or the process delayed. I appreciate your advice/experience!

I'm not 100% on this, but fairly certain mine was titled the same. Rather than state you have never received or are not currently receiving social assistance perhaps this is something that is only mentioned IF you are receiving it. I wouldn't worry too much, but it might be a good idea to call CIC and confirm.

The Notice of Assessment is the Option C. Why the difference in names, no idea.

All I could tell when I received my "Option C" from CRA was that it was a longer version of the Notice of Assessment you'd normally get with your tax return (more detailed).

If you called CRA and asked them for it then you probably sent the correct form. If it was just the copy from your last tax return, then maybe just have one available to send in once they open your package. It only takes a week or 2 to get one from CRA.

I sent the one that was from my last tax return. I was thinking I could go get one tomorrow and send it in ASAP, hoping they don't delay the process or send it back as incomplete. I just wasn't sure how to send it if I don't yet have a client ID number or anything.

I will be calling the CRA and CIC in the morning to figure it out, hopefully. I was hoping posting here someone would know, and I could get some sleep tonight. Haha. ;)

Really? I heard elsewhere that they are two different things. I assumed they were the same, which is why I sent the Notice of Assessment I received with my tax returns.

They are 2 different things. Your Notice of Assessment comes automatically after you file your taxes but you have to phone and specifically request the Option C Printout. Mine was about 7 pages and had a lot more information then the NOA. I was also told to request 'all the slips' when requesting the Option C Printout. Not sure; I think this referred to the T4 slips, etc. The woman on the phone at CRA knew what I meant anyhow.

I would not worry too much. This is fixable. This is what I would suggest:

- call 1-800-959-8281, and request the Option C printout. You should recieve this in about a week. I believe they officially tell you 7-10 days but it usually comes faster.
- call the CIC call centre 1-888-242-2100 to see what they suggest.
- my suggestion would be to send a letter to CPC-Mississauga stating that you didn't realize the Option C printout (it doesn't clearly say Option C anywhere on the form by the way) was different than the Notice of Assessment and are now sending it in addition to the Notice of Assessment already included with your app. Clearly mark the Sponsor's name, Applicant's name and the Receipt # for your fees so that they can match it up with your app. (since you at this point do not have a Client ID). You are in the sponsorship phase and it probably has not been processed yet, so sending in the additional information now should be ok.

Hope this helps.

UPDATE:

I called both CIC and CRA and this is what happened. For future reference for anyone who has this problem:

CIC:
They told me that they will not accept it separately, and that I had no file yet so there could be no notice placed.
They then told me that I will be contacted once they discover it missing, and will request it. I will have the opportunity to fax it over, and if they cannot contact me then they will mail a portion back with a return letter to the person dealing with my package.
They assured me that for something small like that, I will not be dropped back in que and my package will resume it's course as soon as they receive my Option C print outs.
I was happy to hear that it won't delay the process for me any longer than it takes to mail the forms to them.

CRA:
A very nice man printed all of my Option C print outs for every year I filed taxes, and said that one for every year is required for immigration. He said it will take 5-10 business days, but I got lucky and actually called a city near to me so it should arrive even quicker.

Hope this information proves useful to others!

Thanks so much for everyone's help, advice and guidance!

I didn't have the Option C, it certainly wasn't 7 pages.... NOA should be sufficient, I've already been approved as a sponsor and everything people have said leads me to believe I only provided the NOA (but directly from CRA).

I only sent the last tax year (that's what the document checklist said was required for the sponsor). Hope that is ok.

Kess they only require the last tax year and the option C is only 1 or 2 pages long.
