American girlfriend who is a certified nurses assistant is looking to move to Canada with me. Just wondering 1. how long does it take to get a work permit?
2.How long is a work permit good for?
3.Do you have to have a job offer to get work permit?

Thanks

This seems like it would be a simple answer, does no one here know?

1. Work permit processing time 3months or longer if information provided is not sufficient.
2. Valid for 6months and it extendable.
3. Yes. You need to have a valid job offer to apply for work permit.
Or you need apply for PR for migrate without job. Visa valid for 5years. PR process will take >8months ideally(from ECA to COPR).

All these information are available in the CIC website. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/index.asp

Thank you for the reply.
Seems like it must be very difficult to get a job in Canada when you have to wait 3 months

Her employer will also need to obtain an approved LMIA before she can apply for a work permit. That's a 4-6 month process that requires the employer to advertise the job for a month first to prove no Canadian could be found for the role. Once/if the LMIA is approved, she can actually obtain the work permit at the border (she doesn't have to apply for one online/via paper and wait). The LMIA part is however the difficult bit. Most employers aren't willing to go through the process and if there are enough nursing assistants in Canada, it won't be approved.

I just want to get her here as fast as possible with the ability to work. I'm sure that's what everyone wants.

Is there a faster way to get her here?

If your relationship is committed and serious, get married and sponsor her for permanent residency using the outland process.

Alternatively if you're not ready for that, she could come to Canada to complete further education under a study permit. It's too late to do this for the September term - so the earliest would be January. What she plans to take in Canada must make sense based on her previous education and experience - so she would want to continue her education in the field of nursing, perhaps to become a registered nurse. This is an expensive option since international student fees are high. She'll need to show a bank balance of $25K as a minimum (possibly more, depending on her tuition) just to be approved.

In that case getting married and sponsoring her either outland or inland will be fastest. You'll want to join the Family Sponsorship section of the forum and read through the threads there if you decide to go that route.

Getting a job offer is next to impossible for a foreign worker. So I forget that route. Might have been some chance if her occupation fell under NAFTA - but it doesn't.

Is it possible that the Saskatchewan health district has previously done an LMIA and make the process quicker or does a new LMIA need to be done for each applicant?

I was hoping for common law but how can we be common law if she cant live here

She comes for six months as a visitor and then towards at the end of that visit extends her visit by another six months to become common law. It's not that hard - many here have done it. Of course as a visitor to Canada, she won't be allowed to work or attend school and won't be covered under the health care system.

New LMIA is required for each employee.
