It is absolutely sure that Cubans can fly on ANY airline that will issue a one way ticket, right? I'm asking because my father spoke to several airlines that said that Cubans would only be able to fly Cubana, or AC. My understanding is that this is a myth, and that Cubans with permanent residence elsewhere are free to travel with any company that will issue a one way ticket. The problem truly resides in the fact that year round, MOST companies wont do this.

I'm asking because since it's Christmas time, there are A LOT more flights than usual, and Sunwing seems to be the only one with a flight out of Cuba everyday as a one way ticket.

It would make no sense to me that any airline company could refuse someone to leave the country if they have all the proper documentation that they are able to reside elsewhere. On what grounds? The whole AC/Cubana debacle seems ridiculous to me, and I cant find anything online that confirms this. Guess I just wanted to make sure that this was true since it seems Sunwing will be our only way out at that point!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The urban legend about the flights is crazy.
You can get them a ticket with whoever will issue them a one way ticket.
Sunwing always seems to be confused with this issues.
Other than that, any airline is fine.

i always heard no chartered flights..therefore that is why only AC and Cubana! my dad arrived 42 years on Sata (Portugal flight non chartered) even my mom still remembers her limitations.

What about ownership of property rights and future purchasing of a house or build one? The ease of Cubans going in and out of Cuba in the future without hassles? The PRE protects the Cubans with all of this presently. ??? I just found out that...... the Cuban needs to have 2 ID cards. One for them to use for the future and the other goes with the PRE APP not sure about the PVE App? They also will only give one extra ID card and not again after this? This way the Cuban can return to Cuba to visit for vaca /family and still be able to have this card to use when needed while in Cuba, like for transit,medical,dental and whatever else they use it for at present. Maybe that will change with the PRE going? Has anybody else heard of this? ???

When they changed the rules about the buying and selling of property in Cuba, they also changed the laws that Cubans maintain their property wether they live in or out of cuba

Sunwing usually won't.

Thanks Shuster! I understand that the issue is really that chartered flights usually have all inclusive return trips and dont usually issue one way tickets period. But during the holidays there are more options to fly, so if sunwing will sell a one way ticket, they cant say: no youre not allowed because youre cuban! wouldnt make sense! Glad I got another opinion! ;D

I was only charged a $50 cancellation per one way trip and the money was put back on MY westjet dollar account because I booked them on my frequent flyer account. If you book a flight for your husband and can't make the day you're only out $50 and you don't need to buy insurance. You can then use the credit to fly down later or keep it and apply it for his trip at a later date. Air Canada and Sunwing are far from accommodating and I have lost lots of money through rebookings with Air Canada.

Sorry to hear your TRV was refused... unfortunately its something we hear of way too often around here! Wish it was easier four our loved ones to come and visit. Have you applied for permanent residency yet for her? Where are you from and where in Cuba is your wife from? (I'm assuming she's from Cuba since you posted on this thread, but I may be wrong!)

Thanks also for the advice re: Westjet. at this point im looking at whatever flight we can get. Im not going to book it yet anyways but sunwing seems to be with the most options around this time if year. I really despise AC and will do whatever I can to avoid them, but whatever works will have to be

Hi Avana,

You're correct in all your assumptions. I am married to a wonderful teacher from Cienfuegos and we have a little girl together. We met in March 2010 and married this year. The papers were filed July 3 and I was approved September 12. I don't know how to check on the status of the papers in Havana, but from the looks of the spreadsheet we should hear really soon. It certainly has been an experience to navigate the paperwork, and most times I have more trouble from Canadian authorities than I do their Cuban counterparts.

I live in NS and I don't have easy access to a consulate. That turned out to be quite an experience when we were married. I sent the papers to the consulate for transcription with a return envelope and they returned them NOT transcribed. I had to rush to Toronto get them transcribed last minute by a lawyer and then literally run to the consulate before they closed to get the papers I needed.

One small request. I am having trouble figuring out what all the acroynyms mean..ie PEV AOR etc etc. If it's not too much trouble can someone that does the spreadsheet put in a small glossary spelling these out.
