Has anyone switched to visitor status as their work permit ended?

Has anyone switched to visitor status as their work permit ended? Either by filling in a form (IMM5708) to do so in country, or by leaving the country and re-entering as a visitor while their work permit had time left? If so, did you succeed or fail? I'm trying to work out my chance of success if I have ample proof of funds and wasn't working for a few months before my work permit ended.

Were you applying for permanent residence at the time?

People do this every day. Provided you have proof of funds, you should have no issues. Note that it is safer to apply online than it is to do a border run.
