I never even thought about this until I happened upon an earlier post asking about it.

My wife and I have started shipping boxes back to Canada addressed to my name at my parents address. They are only books, clothes and a few souvenirs. Do we really need to fill out that list of goods imported or whatever it is called?

I sent 6 boxes home a few years ago to my address without a problem, what is the difference in this situation if it is all addressed to me?

Thanks

As a returning resident you are required to declare any goods... if you follow the instructions they will be tax free providing you have lived abroad for a year.

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/dm-md/d2/d2-3-2-eng.pdf

Goods imported by a member of the Canadian Forces, by an employee of the Canadian government, or by a former resident of Canada returning to Canada to resume residence in Canada after having been a resident of another country for a period of not less than one year, or by a resident returning after an absence from Canada of not less than one year, and acquired by that person for personal or household use and actually owned, possessed and used abroad by that person for at least six months prior to that person’s return to Canada and accompanying that person at the time of their return to Canada.

Listing Goods to be Imported
9. Prior to importation, former residents must prepare a detailed list in duplicate of all goods to be imported that indicates the make, model, serial numbers (where possible) and approximate value of each item. For general household items, a group listing and overall value is sufficient (e.g. kitchen utensils – $000). The list should be divided into two parts showing which items are accompanying the owner at the time of return and which items are to arrive at a later date as “goods to follow.” This list must be presented to the border services officer at the first port of entry (POE) when the former resident arrives in Canada, even if no goods are being imported at that time. Instead of a list, Form B4A, Personal Effects Accounting Document (list of goods imported), may be used.

A full explanation can be found here: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5087-eng.html and here: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5113-eng.html

You can find the form here: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/forms-formulaires/b4a.pdf

So I'm moving my belongings to my parents' place for storage while I 'visit' my husband during my PR application. I plan on just doing the good to follow list while I pack in June, but if I decide to bring fewer things once the PR is taken care of, is that ok? I don't plan on bringing anything major anyway (besides the car) so is it ok if there are things on the list I dont end up bringing? I figure it's better that than the opposite.

Yes, it is ok to list things you don`t end up bringing. Did you check on the admissibility of your car?

VW new beetle. I had a bit of random work done to it not long ago when I happened to be up there and asked if it met the emission standards and other things it would need to be 'street legal' in Canada and he said it would be.

-Also checked the website, its' on the list to be ok. Thanks :)

You might want to find out if vehicle has any recalls now, in case it needs to have some work done. I have found that Canadian car dealerships will charge for US recall work. And remember you must submit 2 copies for your title (must be in your name) to the US export office several days prior to exporting your car. The export office is closed weekends and Friday is their busiest day (at least at the Buffalo crossing).
