Hi everyone,

I will probably get ITA this coming Wednesday. I also have a flight booked to Canada on June 10, to visit my partner, i.e. as a tourist (I have a Dutch passport and I got an ETA). I have a return flight in September.

If I receive ITA this Wednesday and submit my application soon after, I can do that as a tourist from Canada right? I already got all my documents except the police certificate, which I hope I will be able to obtain before I leave for my visit to Canada. Can I do my medical check there or do I have to do it in my home country? What if they invite me to send my passport for the visa?

Thanks,

Marieke

You can do your medical in Canada no problem. You can submit your PR application while you're in Canada, but-- someone can correct me if I'm wrong here-- you should still file as an outland applicant, as you would from your home country, since you are not living in Canada and will be returning to your home country regardless.

If you're worried about the passport request, you could wait a month or two into your trip before submitting your application, just in case they process your application particularly quickly. You get 90 days from your ITA to submit your application, so you certainly have the luxury of doing so.

Thank you so much for your response! Yes I have my company here, my home address, my insurance... So am definitely living here in The Netherlands. I might wait to submit my application, unless I could send my passport through express courier? Thanks in any case!

I'm not sure, honestly! If it were me, I'd submit my application in late July or August and then wait until I'm back in my home country to send my passport, just to play it safe. Chances are they won't finish processing your application until after you leave, but even if they do, you have 30 days to send your passport after your PPR.

Also keep in mind that occasionally they will ask for additional information, so you'll need to be able to access whatever they're requesting if you submit during your stay (some things are easier than others). I don't know if they put a time limit on how long you have to collect that information, though.

I have heard of cases where people have requested that their visa office be changed (in your case, to Ottawa) due to their circumstances, but I don't know if that would apply to you. In that case, you'd be able to send your passport within Canada, but don't take my word for it as I am still in the application process myself and won't have to send my passport anywhere (since I'm a US citizen). :)

OK, thanks a lot for sharing your information in any case! I will just ask them for advice I think. They usually answer quite fast on Twitter. Let's first get my ITA and all of my documents ready for submission :) Thanks!

Have you had good luck reaching out to them on Twitter? I have questions that need answering, haha. What's their handle?

Yes not too bad! They refuse to go into a lot of personal detail, but they do try to answer, eventually. It's @CitImmCanada.

They will only ask you to submit your passport to Netherlands visa office according to your EE profile. To be eligible to submit to Ottawa, you will have to alter your "Country of residence" to Canada, which is not a safe choice since you do not have a valid "resident status" i.e. a study permit or work permit in Canada. You might be challenged during the following procedure. So just try to subimit when you get back home.

Ah yes I see, thanks. I got my ITA yesterday. So if I submit it and all goes well and fast, I'll be in Canada when they ask for my passport. I don't suppose any express mail courier service will help...
