Basically, Ive been on a student visa for the past few months. I met my boyfriend online 2 years ago, so we thought itd be very convenient for us if I could come study here and we could be together in person. I study Culinary at the local college here however we plan to get married soon and we're not sure how to go about it. We dont want to be seperated during a waiting period so we would like to do this sooner than later. What visa/ permident residence should I apply for, and is it going to override my student visa or what? Ive been refused access into canada once before because I had some bad luck at the border and brought too many things across without thinking. Please help! I'm very confused and dont want to be seperated from him.

Do you already hold a study permit for Canada? Or do you hold a study permit for the US?

If you already have a study permit you could apply after graduation for Postgraduate Work Permit, if your program makes you eligible for it. That way regardless the PR sponsorship process you can stay in the country from 1-3 years. depending on your program you are enrolled in.

Other option is applying for PR through Express Entry if you have good points. It's a faster process, but you still will need a Work Permit if your study permit expires.

If I'm not mistaken you also can apply for an Open Work Permit if the sponsorship application reaches a certain phase.

Your student visa and PGWP are not affected by a Sponsorship or Express Entry application.

He can sponsor you for PR when married.

Applying for PR will have no effect on your study permit.
