Hi Guys,

I am a Filipino citizen working here in canada (LMIA). Me and my girfriend (a canadian citizen) are planning to get married in Alberta. I have read that i need to provide a proof of sinlge status in order to get a marriage license. Does anyone know where can i acquire this? Should i make a request in the Philippines? In canada or both? I hope someone can advise me. Thank you so much.

Here is what I pulled from the Service Alberta website:

http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/1149.cfm

My husband and I just got married in Ontario and we did not have to provide such information. You do sign a dlclaration saying that you are not already married and things like that. You do need some identification, passport and birth certificate are the best. Translated if they are not in English or French. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks a lot CaroM8!

I hope it means that i can just go to the registry agency and say Im single. :)

Maybe the Proof of SIngle status that i have read about is for another province but not in alberta.

By the way CaroM8, What do you mean that you just signed a declaration that you were not yet married during that time. Did you bring a Notarized Document to the Registry Agent or The Registry Agent has this document?

Thank You Again.

I also got married in Ontario, and we got our license at the Zorra Township office. I didn't need anything notarized to state that I was single, it was just part of whatever I was signing/filling out.

When you get your license, make sure you check it over for errors. We actually found two on ours after the fact (but before the wedding) and had to drive back to get them corrected. They had spelled my middle name wrong, and also had my current city spelled incorrectly.

Sorry maybe my wording was misleading. When you go to the office to get your marriage license they make you fill out a couple of forms and one of them is basically a statement that all the information you are providing is true, no misrepresentation etc etc... Don't worry about it, it's pretty straight forward, nothing complicated.

And yes do check the forms for errors!

It is important to check for little mistakes, even important details when we apply for the marriage license my date of birth was incorrect, so we told the employee at city hall and he correct it.
Question... How long does it take to get your Marriage Certificate in Ontario after you marriage???
The new update from the provincial site says it can take up to 16 weeks. Is that so???

I know it says that and I was a bit skeptical. The reason they say that is because you have to give time to your officiant to officially register your marriage with the province. Once that is done you can request it.

We were married on May 29th, our marriage was registered the following week. I ordered the certificate at the beginning of July when we came back from honeymoon and got it in the mail the following week.

So not 16 weeks.. haha

I got married July 23rd, requested it the following week and I'm still waiting. So it's been 6 weeks for me so far and no sign of it yet :/

Oh shoot that sucks... Maybe your officiant was late filing the paperwork? Although these months are busy for weddings in Ontario.. maybe that is causing the delay..
