Hi seniors.
I applied as a single applicant. Just want to confirm, will getting engaged (not yet married) before landing invalidate my PR visa?
Thanks.

If you get engaged or married after getting Visa stamp then its irrelevant to status of your PR visa . It will not effect your status. Now you have to sponsor your partner.

Thanks for the response, but I disagree a little bit. As expressly stated by CIC, we should notify them should there be any changes in our marital status, failure to do so could lead to visa cancellation or we could not be able to sponsor our spouse in the future.
What I would like to confirm is the bearing of just getting engaged (not yet married) to my civil status. Will it be necessary to inform IO as well?

You do not need to inform CIC of your engagement and are fine to land as a PR while engaged.

If you haven't landed yet, a marriage will nullify your single entry visa. Engagement won't. If you place to marry I would recommend that you get your marriage registered asap and inform the visa office and add your spouse to the application and get his/her visa and land together. Sponsoring is a different ball game and you may end up living speperately for a considerable time.

It is also mentioned in the copr that you should inform any changes in your family circumstances to the visa officer. The number of dependents are also mentioned there along with your marital status (if I remember correctly). Getting engaged is not official. So no worries. Getting married is official and should be informed.

This is wrong and horrible advice. If you get engaged - you are fine. If you get married - NOT fine. Getting married invalidates your PR visa since it was issued to you when you were single. If you use that visa to land and become a PR, then you are committing misrepresentation (which could result in your PR status being revoked) and you will also NEVER be able to sponsor your spouse for PR. If you get married you MUST return your PR visa and add your spouse to your application. CIC will then process your spouse and issue a new visa to both of you once the additional processing is complete.

Hi, thank you for this information.
I have additional question does my partner ( we are engaged only) need sponsor for POF?

I mean i am international student, applied single but before coming to canada we got engaged. I want to sponsor him coming here.

Thanks for your response.

You cannot sponsor a fiance. You will either have to get married, or if you have lived together long enough (1 year in a marriage like relationship) to be common law, you can sponsor as a common law spouse.

Simply getting engaged is not enough.
