Our Landing Story.... Started packing our Kaya about a month ago and concluded on Sunday (well not sure u can ever finish packing becos of some last minute things u might need to stuff here and there). Our flight was at 8.40pm on Tuesday so I checked in online and we left de house around 3 and headed for the airport with our 11 bags and 10 carry on luggages (sent some 4 bags on Monday via Nipost) and then began a series of Favour and events. Our bags got scanned and the custom officer scanning asked me what was in de bottle inside one of the bags. I smiled and told him it was peppersoup ingredients. He looked @ me and said okay o. Next stop was weighing the bags. I had an extra bag which weighed 35kg and 5 other bags in excess of the allowable 23kg per bag. I was already prepared to pay becos I no too like tori but God had other plans. One of the guys @ the airline said pay for the extra bag and for only 2 of the excess @ $50 each instead of $80 each. I was saved $300. We moved past immigration and was waiting to board when I got a news alert: Terrorists Strike @ Istanbul Ataturk Airport. My jaw dropped and I said a prayer within me becos our flight was with Turkish Airlines. I didn't tell my husband because his next reaction would have been "Cancel the flight" etc. Surprisingly, we still boarded and after being on de plane for about 45mins we were told to disembark and go back to de boarding area. After waiting for like an hour, the officials mentioned that we would not be flying that night becos of the Terrorist attack at the Istanbul airport and were going to lodge us at an hotel until they were sure we could fly. Some passengers refused to go to the hotel and requested for ticket refunds. My children were visibly upset and husband after much talk said we should go to the hotel. The time was 11.47pm. I was tired, upset but thankful. Just as my husband was coming back with an airport taxi, we were told that we should go back to the boarding area. Passengers that had gone were called to come back. We didn't leave Nigeria until 1.30am or thereabout. The journey was smooth and my children were in cloud 9. My little gal slept throughout the almost 7hrs flight. Fast forward to Istanbul.... The Airport was jam packed. If not for the news and cancellation of some flights, I'd have said nothing happened becos pple just dey waka up and down. Our initial layover of 8 hours had been reduced to less than 4 becos of the initial delay in Nigeria. Our flight to Toronto was initially delayed for an hour but was reduced to about 30mins. We landed on the Canadian soil. We went thru immigration, told them we had some foods which they didn't mind. We signed our Copr and the lady said "Welcome to Canada, You're now a PR". Service Canada had closed so we couldn't do our SIN. By the time we got to the baggage claim, ours was the only load there. We got a porter who wanted to play smart with cart charges but I showed him that me sef be Naija. Got into the car after 150mins at the airport!! Canada is indeed a beautiful country. We're still in hibernating mode but so far so good.......

This is a dream come true for our family and I use it as a point of contact for every expectant applicant. Your dreams will be fulfilled beyond measures and God's mercies, grace, favor will seek us all out.
CalgaryChic, felicitations on your successful landing, may you possess your possessions in the marple leaf country.

Hi Ogaolopa, the ball is entirely in your court. Your age has nothing to do with your ability to find and build a productive and great career here. It is against the law for any employer to ask your age in this country. I came with over 13 years banking experience in a specialised field. It seemed daunting at first to fit into the system, trying to find how my skills in fraud investigation can be applied here. As you can see, I have experience working with bank regulators/police in solving financial crime and recovering funds. I then sought out Nigerians via LinkedIn who have landed here as well as others in my target sector and slowly built a relationship with them, finding out industry trends and how best to make my self attractive professionally.
Hmmmn!!! what an epistle, That is Pipis husband for you, may your days be long bro.

Dear All,

Please I need to know how I can get back urgently into Canada without a PR card. We made a soft landing on June 3rd and returned to Lagos after a week. PR cards are yet to arrive at our stated address.

I would appreciate your speedy response. It's an emergency situation.

Best Regards,

Hello Tosin79, you can check this link http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=064&top=10 and http://settlement.org/ontario/immigration-citizenship/landing-and-leaving/leaving-canada/do-i-really-need-a-pr-card-to-travel-back-to-canada/

You will need to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document. However another way which should work for you will be if you have valid visa to enter the USA, you may fly to a US airport close to your destination in Canada ( e.g. Buffalo if you are heading to Toronto) and then enter Canada by land border in which case your Nigerian passport and CoPR will allow you entry into Canada.

I did confirm that possibility with the Canadian Border Services Agency as I don't have my PR card yet but going on a visit to the US in about 10 days.

With a potential Canadapost strike, PR cards may even be delayed longer. Hope this helps.

There you go! The only hurdle you need to figure out is car rental or if you could have someone pick you up at the airport you land in the US and drive you into Canada.

I don't know requirements for car rentals in the US as per someone holding Nigerian Driving License but you can research / call car rental companies (And car rental companies will usually ask for a credit card). I do not think a taxi will be able to take you across the border with CoPR as a taxi will be a commercial vehicle. Another option, assuming you are heading into Ontario / GTA, is to take a taxi from Buffalo Airport to the Niagara Falls border crossing (Rainbow Bridge) and then walk across the border (provided your luggage is manageable) Once you are in the Canada side, you can then find a transportation to your destination.

Just throwing up ideas as you said this is an emergency. Cheers.

Thanks again Ibadanchap. We have friends in Toronto who can pick us up at Buffalo airport. It's actually a medical emergency. For this reason, I need to be 100% sure that this will work. We are currently in Lagos not within Canada.

Hi tosin79, you can apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document see link: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/travel.asp. you will need to apply on time though as it can take anywhere from a week to a month for you to receive it back if approved. You can equally include the nature of your urgency in a cover note along with the application package and see if that helps with processing the PRTD faster.

Sorry about the medical emergency. It is well IJN.

I am 100% sure you will be able to pass through land borders with your Nigerian passport and CoPR. I landed at the Peace bridge at Buffalo on May 28th officially as PR though i have been resident in Canada since 2013. Because we had a family vacation planned for the US in july even before we got our PR and i knew we may not get our PR card by that time, i specifically asked the CBSA agent if we would be able to enter back into Canada if we travel to the US via a private vehicle at land border. The agent confirmed we can. Even though you are in Nigeria right now, there is no difference between me and you if we are both in the US and need to enter Canada as we both PRs and carry Nigerian passports.

PR card is only required if you are entering Canada by a commercial vehicle, irrespective of port of landing as the commercial vehicle will not allow you to board without a PR card or PRTD in the first place

You may also make inquiries with the CBSA on this or the Canadian embassy so your mind can be at rest.

The other option of course is to apply for PRTD as mentioned and hope for speedy processing based on your emergency.
