Forms of governmental aids for newcomers

I hope you’re all doing great and enjoying your Canada endeavours

I’ve been thinking for sometime before writing this thread (in fear of quick judgement) but decided to finally do it.

As you all know, it is extremely challenging to move to a new country and as you also know finance can be your number one concern although we have provided “proof of funds” as part of our immigration application, which only worked just because Canada (according to their points based system) sees a potential in getting a job and having a normal life. My question is this:

Once I land and start looking for a job immediately (while paying for everything on my own), if there is no foreseeable opportunity to getting a job, is there any form of financial support or housing provision from the government till you get a proper job?

Please don’t understand this question as if I only decided to immigrate just to get governmental support and do nothing, this is hopefully only temporary.

I don't think there are any. If there are, there won't be people asking passerby money or sleep on sidewalks or banks outside business hours. There are food banks.

There are liquidation centres where you get cheap(sometimes free) furniture.

Also, visit newcomer centres they will guide you to furniture banks where you can get free mattresses and pillows.

That being said, as you rightly pointed out, its difficult to move to a new country (small economy with less jobs)

My suggestion is not to be picky with jobs.

If you have to work for Tim Horton’s or Mcdonald’s or wherever else to survive while pursuing employment you really like, you do it in order to pay for the basics.

I think that is one of the most important things a new immigrant must know. Just because we were engineers or lawyers or doctors from where we were, we should not expect to get jobs that are over the minimum wage straight away as we do not have Canadian working experience. There are those who refuse to accept this and they are the ones who end up failing.

There are many programs that help newcomers settle. Language training, job help, all sorts of things:

Canada has various forms of social assistance/welfare. You can read about them here. They have various forms of eligibility so not everything is available to newcomers.

There is always a job, even if it is not the one you like or want.

You are required to have proof of funds since this is what you will need and use to survive the first year or so after you arrive in Canada (depending on how long it takes you to find a job). Once you have been in Canada for a while and if you end up exhausting these funds and are unable to find work, you can apply for social assistance. This isn't very much money and won't give you a good life here - so finding a job is a priority.

Provinces do have subsidised housing available for those with low incomes. However wait times for many of these programs are 10+ years - so this isn't something you'll be able to realistically count on.

Would encourage people to have more that the needed proof of funds if moving with their family and to more expensive regions. Travelling as the income earner(s) first may also be a good idea especially if you have young children that will require childcare.

From your other posts, the first hurdle you have is to apply for a tourist visa. If you are here asking how to get government assistance once you claim asylum, it pretty much indicates you will not be approved for a TRV.

Think about what you will do in Canada once you get approval. It is very difficult to be approved for a TRV to go here right now due to the multiple asylum claims from fake visitors.
