Hello all,
We live in Alberta and my parent just moved to Canada from India as Permanent residents in September of 2013. They are living with me and my wife.. and we take care of them.. They are both 60yesr old and don't work..
They are going to ESL classes and some in the class told them about some govt benefits that I had not heard of..
• Alberta works health care card... they can apply this card as they both don't work and are considered low income.. in addition to normal coverage this supports them with stuff like.. Dental, eye care, medicines..
• Also some one told them they can get some kind of welfare income from Govt $600 each because they are above 60years of age? I am not sure of this either... I was under the impression that for 10yrs if they ask the govt for any kind of support.. I as a sponsor will be blacklisted... as I have undertaken to support them for next 10 years..?
Can anyone please provide some insight on these?

Thanks

I can't comment on the health care card. However if they take any form of welfare from the government, the government will then go after you to pay this money back since you signed the 10 year support agreement.

If you are instead asking about old age security / pension, then they would have to be 65 or older to qualify and also meet other criteria outlined here:
