I dont think thats quite right. It clearly says in the instruction guide -

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/application-forms-guides/guide-0002-application-canadian-citizenship-under-subsection-5-1-adults-18-years-older.html#Step4

We need to know all of the names you have ever used in order to verify your identity. If you used any other names other than the one being requested in your grant of citizenship application, print them in the chart. Examples: Name at time of birth, name before marriage, previous married names, married name, nick names or any other names you have used. If you have legally changed your name, see Appendix A – Changing the name on your document.

To be on the safe side - we put it as N/A.
Am more convinced to mention the name at birth because the column on the far right Have a section and among of selections is “Name at Birth”.
So, if you never change your name you can just write your name and choose “Name of birth”

they’ve asked for all the names you have ever used. If you had only one name then you have to put that in there in correct format matching your official documentation. Are you saying the reason should be N/A? I don’t think putting name at birth is wrong either If it actually was your name at birth.
If any name is DIFFERENT THAN the one you are using for the main application.

I am saying that you should not enter any values in that field because you haven't used any other name apart from the one in your application. see the highlighted portion below.

And here is the first sentence in that paragraph you are quoting in bold

We need to know all of the names you have ever used in order to verify your identity

The question is fairly straightforward "List all the names you have used, including name at birth, maiden name, previously married name(s), alias(es) and nicknames

I mean if my name was Jane Smith before my marriage and Jane Walker after marriage I would list both and from the drop-down menu, I would select the reasons as maiden name and married name respectively.

If I was always Jane Smith, then it would be Name at birth from the drop-down

edit: Dont think this is a big deal. If people have had only name, doing either is OK and will not result in CIC returning our applications

Thats a fair point and can be argued two ways - I submitted my application without filling this field and putting a N/A against this question because I have already put my details in Question 4. If the application is returned, i will resubmit again with this detail.

I dont think it will be returned to be honest. You have had only one name, the CIC agent hopefully isn't a robot and will get what you are saying

I think as they stated, to answer all questions. It all depends on the agent if he so strict to
Follow this or thinks logic

That I can only hope for..... Do you think its a good idea to resend the application again without waiting for them to reject it and resend it and waste two months ?

Dont think it is required honestly. Your interpretation could be the right one. And since you have had only 1 name I think it is OK. If you had more than 1 name and put N/A then yes I would agree it is an issue

Okay... I rethought about why I did not fill this up.

This was my thought process - In many countries when a child is born - usually they give the name Baby Smith or Baby Walker and issue the birth certificate in the hospital on the same day - which is in fact the Name at Birth. After this they change their name to let's say - John Smith or Jack Walker which is what they use for all documents which becomes their legal name and the name at birth doesn't appear in any other documents. I know this because my daughter was named as Baby Mother's Surname in the hospital books but I added the correct legal name in her birth certificates and hospital records as well.

Do what you think is right. I believe logic prevails.

I dont think that they will return your application, as question 5 is more over to check your listed names against their Criminal records Database to see if there are any records attached to it.

Of course, and also no one has had their application returned for providing more than what is required for sure.
