Hi All, I got a new car in US post the soft landing in Jan this year thinking i will stay in US for some more time.

Now I am planning to move to Canada in Feb/Mar 2021.

Did anyone have similar experience of exporting a Car bought post the first landing . If so what are costs associated with it.

Hello:
Just wondering if during your soft landing, you submitted "BSF186 - Personal Effects Accounting Document".
If YES and you included previous vehicles but not the current new car, you might have to pay duties.

As said above, you should expect you'll most likely need to pay duties / taxes. You can use an import company estimator to get an idea of how much this may be like the one below.

You can bring the car duty free actually. You need to transfer your car title to your spouse name and have the good to follow processed again for them. That way no need to pay any taxes.

Actually i am the dependent and my spouse is the primary applicant. We did the soft landing together in Jan. The car is on my name. Can they reprocess the goods to follow list for me again?

Goods to follow can be done only once and if they have done it for your name , it cannot be done again for your name. You need to change the title for whoever it hasn't been done and can get it done by adding car. If you are not keen on transfer of ownership, then no options than paying taxes.

Hi Pramod,

Just making sure, you own the car right or is it financed? If its financed, its a whole different story.

Thanks.

In a similar situation. I had to sell the car listed on goods to follow (GTF) and buy another. Would I still need to pay taxes or can the car listed on the GTF be updated?

When you say buy, do you own it or is it financed? You cannot import a financed car.

It's a new / different car so you would need to pay the tax.

Thanks for the response. The car is currently financed. If I am to frequently travel between the US and Canada for work, would I be able to keep the US plates until I pay off the car loan?

I do not think thats possible. i haven't come across anyone doing so, infact Cbsa wouldn't allow it. Once you have moved, it should be a Canadian car.

If you are driving the car into Canada and CBSA officer asks you about the car, you might run into trouble. A settled Canadian resident isn't supposed to drive a US car - not imported yet. If you just travel to canada for short visits without intention of settling in, mostly no issues - but if you run into a rude officer, you might get stuck.

Does anyone know how the cbsa estimate the cost of the vehicle . This year Sept i got the 2015 rogue for 14k USD with taxes and dealer fee. Last week Carmax guys offered 8k USD for the same car with 3 k more miles on it. Will they still consider the price we bought for anything else ?
