Engaged - Can I begin applying?

I am engaged to be married in May of this year. Corrently my partner lives overseas and I am living in Canada. We have never lived together, and are therefore not eligible to apply as common law partners. Can I begin my application as a sponsor even though we are not married?

I am asking because I am somewhat concerned that my hubby will have problems getting back into Canada (the wedding will be overseas, and we plan to return to Canada, he will have a visitor's visa) and I have heard that it's a good idea to have a copy of your spousal application to show at customs.

Any other advice? How likely or unlikely is it to be turned around?

You will need to be married before you can apply.

There is no fiancé visa, or anything similar in Canada.

However, you can still pay the fees before submitting an application, but you cannot submit the application until you are married.
