He said before June, then he said before summer which is June 21th.

I will apply June 2th so I am right at the edge. I hope they will give us at least 2 weeks notice.
The summer in administrative sense is from 1st of July.

Travel Dream,
Thank you for your effort , but that video is an old one and unfortunately again there is no cut off date mentioned. The plans of the government might be different now...

An example what I mean is probably the people who have been interested in that issue they can recall how in February last year the same Minister mentioned on CBC that they expect the Bill to become a Law at the end of the year (2014) and after couple of weeks we saw the rush to become a Law before the summer. So the end result was months earlier than the expected time.
..

you are right... I really want to be optimistic like you

what is your expectation about the announcement date? days, week, month before the effective date?

I'm trying to be realistic according to my understandings, when I read the official statements... absolutely none of them actually can point something definitive as a date or month.
By using that kind of a language the government want to let the door wide open for future variations...

Ever since I saw for the first time something like "Approximately" automatically somehow I had the feeling that it will be a long mystery. You see that now "Approximately" a year later, there is still nothing definitive.
In my wildest expectations I expected the date to be clear at the end of February, because we are getting to the +-3 months range from June. But as we all see there is still nothing official.

My expectations is that the date will be somewhere between 1st of April until October... this is how I understand "Approximately" with a base point June.

The only definitive thing we can understand from the official statements so far is that the law will be enforced for sure this year, but which month ... Mystery

From now on I'm not going to be surprised if one day after 31th of March, we open the CIC site and we already see the new rules enforced without any notice, because they might say... "We gave you the notice approximately one year ago."

Regardless of the cutoff date dilemma (which will be cleared only after the official announcement) , I think, there exist a unfair side in this context which can add extra misery to those who will fall on the cusp threshold. As it is previously declared that any application received in Sydney NS after the cutoff date will be processed under the new rules. Now for this actual case consider two applicants who will be eligible at the same date (for example let it be Sunday June 28th and let the cutoff date be July 1st ), one from Nova Scotia, who needs mostly only one business day to have his application delivered by the end of June 29th (so it is a hit), and the other from British Columbia who needs at least three business days to have his application delivered in the best case by the end of July 2nd -given that June 28th is weekend and July 1st is a holiday- (so it is an obvious miss). I think it is unfair that Because of some unavoidable courier issue, two similar applications receive different consideration. I just wonder if there is any way to have this issue be discussed with the CIC.

Which part of the new law are you referring to?

The stripping of citizenship? That applies to every Canadian dual citizen in Canada, including those born in Canada.

The new 4/6 rule only affects those who applied for citizenship on or after the official set date. Those who applied before the 4/6 rule will follow the 3/4 rule and does not have to maintain residency until oath.

Hi,

Does anybody know if in the new 4/6 rule, will the people who have have been living in Canada before PR would be given 1 year exemption from 4 years, like they used to do previously in the 3/4 rule?

Thanks.

No exception. Pre-PR days in Canada will not be counted towards citizenship in the new 4/6 rule.

Get a new lawyer... Ideally one that knows what they are talking about.

Guyz, i am trying to understand the new residency requirement (which will probably come in effect this summer).
The new residency requirement says 4 out of 6 years. And each of the year, you must be physically present in Canada for 183 days (minimum) per year in 4 out of 6 years.

Does that mean, if an applicant travels outside of Canada for two months per year, can he/she still apply for citizenship after 4 years because the applicant has been living in Canada in 4 out of 6 years, and has spent more than 183 days per year in each of the year ??? or does that applicant has to further complete 2 months that were spent outside Canada each of the years ???
First of all you have live in Canada for at least 1,460.So you can apply only after 1460 days physical presence.

(i) been physically present in Canada for at least 1,460 days during the six years immediately before the date of his or her application,

(ii) been physically present in Canada for at least 183 days during each of four calendar years that are fully or partially within the
six years immediately before the date of his or her application

At first I too thought its 183 days each year. But it not 183 days each year.Later I understood its 183 days during each of four calender years.I felt happy its not so difficult. But there is a catch.

As far as I understood now we can apply for citizenship only around 6 years. Not immediately after 4 years stay in Canada.Because if you apply immediately after 4 years then the first year of last 6 year wont satisfy the (ii)condition. It will be partially in 4 calender years and need 183 days to satisfy the (ii) condition.

They used the word partially with that intension I guess.Otherwise its meaning less.

It will take almost 6 years permanent residence to apply for citizenship if this new law comes into effect.

May be I am wrong.

If I became PR March 2013:
March 2013 - December 2013: 275 days (year 1, requirement ii)
March 2013 - March 2014: 365 days (year 1, requirement i)
January 2014 - December 2014: 365 days (year 2, requirement ii)
March 2014 - March 2015: 365 days (year 2, requirement i)
January 2015 - December 2015: 365 days (year 3, requirement ii)
March 2015 - March 2016: 365 days (year 3, requirement i)
January 2016 - December 2016: 365 days (year 4, requirement ii)
March 2016 - March 2017: 365 days (year 4, requirement i)

exactly 4 years after I became PR I get my passport.

No - you won't get a Canadian passport exactly 4 years after you become a PR. You will qualify to APPLY for citizenship after 4 years. It will be several more months at a minimum before you actually have a Canadian passport.

So after we become PR, do we have to wait for 4 years or 6 years before we can apply for the citizenship?
