Is there any easy way to get a Statement In-Lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment
I was advised by the High Commission of Canada in Colombo to get the following: "An affidavit confirming marital status of bride and groom prior to the wedding" which according to google translates into the above.

- I'm going to get married in Apirl.
- I need this to show I am single
- I live in Toronto. and will be going to Sri Lanka to get Married.
(This is the only document I do not have accounted for)

Any office I can go to in Toronto to get this?

thanks!

I got married in Philippines and I needed that document also for obtaining the Philippine marriage license. I got the document by visiting the Canadian embassy in the Philippines. You will need your passport or PR card, and maybe birth certificate, sadly my memory fails me on the requirements. There is also a fee like 50$. You will get that in the hour, the same day.

Well I will be going to Sri Lanka. So not sure if I can do the same, or even if it will be provided that fast.

Getting Married Overseas

If you are getting married overseas, most countries will require a statement in-lieu of certification of non-impediment to marriage abroad. You can apply for one by mail to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada Authentication and Service of Documents section before your departure. If you are already abroad, you may obtain a "Statement in lieu of Certificate of Non-impediment" from the nearest Canadian government office abroad.

Ok I did a little research. This is the page of the high commission of canada in Sri Lanka, maybe you saw that already.
http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/sri_lanka/offices-bureaux/contact_consul_contactez.aspx?lang=en
Getting the affidavit (statement) in-lieu of non-impediment is a consular service. It says on the website that you need an appointment for consular services.

I saw on this page:
http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/sri_lanka/consular_services_consulaires/fees-frais.aspx?lang=eng
that the fee is either 50 CAD or 6000 LKR.
Maybe you can send them an email to know how much time you need to process, the requirements, and take appointment at the same time.
The Philippines were accepting only the document from the local embassy so I could not process here in Canada before getting there. I guess its the same for Sri Lanka.

based on what I can tell.. I have to write up a statement saying i am single.

then find a commissioner of oaths to sign it..

then send it to the place in ottawa to Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada Authentication and Service of Documents to get it finalized..

-- so now my search begins for a commissioner of oaths who is close by and can do it very cheap or even for free if possible..

Depends which certificate he needs but I got my Statement In-Lieu of non-Impediment, needed for marriage, at the Canadian embassy in Makati, Manila the same day I showed up there.

I got my certificate by mail, yeah it took a while, about 6 weeks. However it is true, if you go to a Canadian embassy, you can get one on the same day.

Yeah that one has to come from Canada and it may take a while depending of the provincial registry it comes from. That's why I said depends which certificate. This thread is about the statement in-lieu of non-impediment and not birth certificate.

YES it's "real". You have to obtain this document from the local embassy in Manila. They call it 'LCM' for short. When you tell them you're there for that, they let you upstairs right away.

YES it's "real". You have to obtain this document from the local embassy in Manila. They call it 'LCM' for short. When you tell them you're there for that, they let you upstairs right away.
So this is what I'm looking to do as well, I am also marrying a Philipina. So all the research I have done says to go to the Canadian Embassy in Manila.
But upon further research, it seems I can also obtain the same document from the Canadian Embassy right here in Canada?

It strikes me that it would be far easier to get it from the Canadian Embassy here in Canada before I leave, so the paperwork is done, and I can't think of any reason why it would make any difference which Canadian Embassy I get it from. There is also detailed information on the Canadian Embassy website in Vancouver detailing how to get this "statement in lieu of non impediment to marriage".

So the simple question is this: Does it make any difference if I get the "STATEMENT IN LIEU OF CERTIFICATE OF NON-IMPEDIMENT TO MARRAIGE" From the Canadian Embassy in Manila, or if I get it from the Canadian Embassy in Canada?
