Once you receive the Learners Permit, you must practise driving for a minimum of one year. You must be supervised by someone at least 25 years old at all times (they must be in vehicle with you.) Learners Permit is valid for 2 years. If you feel you need longer than two years, the L permit can be renewed. When you feel ready (after at least one year), you can take the class 7 road driving test and, if you pass, will have novice status. After 24 months of N status, you become a fully fledged driver! The N period can be shortened by 6 months if you satisfactorily complete an ICBC approved driving course during the L stage.
Restrictions apply. During L stage, you cannot drive between 0500 and midnite. You can carry only one passenger (other than family members). You cannot use any phone or electronic device including hands-free devices while in a car, even if only a passenger.
