Does everyone get RCMP fingerprint request?

Does anyone know if everyone has to submit a RCMP fingerprint request or it's only in cases where you have a very common name (e.g John Chan) or if they find someone with the same name as you with a criminal record that you are asked to do one?

Thanks BCguy. Just received IA and I just did my medicals.Buffalo did not send me the fingerprint request though. From what I see Ottawa is taking 3 months to process medicals. Fingerprints are sent to Ottawa too from what I read...so I am wondering if it's possible for me to get them taken without the request from Buffalo to avoid another delay till PPR.

Also, do you know where I get the digital fingerprinting done (seems to be faster than the manual one). Do I do it at a police station in Calgary or some other place?

No. The Canadian visa office will notify applicants if RCMP fingerprint checks are required.

I know this too PMM. I got this info with my application package but I am assuming they have not gone through my background check yet. I just got request for medicals. Since I studies and worked in Canada and therefore been here for a while, they will most likely eventually ask me to get it done. I might just as well do it to speed up the whole thing. I just found out from the doctor that I could even have done my medicals before Buffalo sent me the request.....as the doctors have the medical forms as well....This would have saved me lots of wait time had I known it earlier...

If you read the info on the RCMP site, it says the background check takes considerably longer if they don't already have your fingerprints in the database. So yeah, maybe it will go faster if you send them your fingerprints now, digitally or in print. What seems to happen is:
1) CIC asks RCMP to conduct background check;
2) RCMP verifies if it has your fingerprints in database;
2.1) if yes, you probably don't need to provide them;
2.2) if not, CIC will send you a fingerprint form or something;

So... yeah, you can save some time if they have your fingerprints...

1. To cover 2 of the above questions, DMP's only have medical forms for family class (spousal& children) they won't do a medical without the request from the overseas office.
2. The overseas office will do a CPIC check to see if you or someone with a similar name/age has a record. If there is no record, then they will not request your fingerprints.

Anyone attempting to enter Canada will obviously be subject to criminal checks, i.e., RCMP. But what about Sponsors? Are they checked,too, for criminal record?

I have a question, I have given CIC FBI clearances (2 of them) and have been in Canada 10 yearrs with my family. My question is just how far reaching is this fingerprint check?
