You do not need Canadian police records unless explicitly asked for them.

Swede is correct.

I included an RCMP (Canadian) police certificate with my application on my lawyer's advice as she explained that while they will request it if needed, that will slow things down as you have to wait for their request, get it done, wait for them to receive the results and process them etc.

Since the police check was so cheap, I considered it worth it to do it just to prevent my application being slowed down.

How much time did it take to get the papers from the RCMP?

A couple of days. I believe their processing time was a maximum of 48 hours for electronically submitted requests; it may have changed now.
