Dear all,

It may sound stupid to me to ask about the difference between a temporary resident visa (TRV) and study permit (SP) since now I have already applied for a study permit but I want detailed information about the exact procedure that an International student will be undergoing from submission of passport till landing in Canada.

According to my information, we will be issued a TRV from CIC of our respective country which will be valid for the entire period of our expected study even stretching beyond the validity date of applicant's passport.. once you land in Canada, the immigration officer will stamp a study permit on your passport which will only be valid till the date of validity your passport.

While studying in Canada once your passport is about to expire you will be required to exit Canada and enter Canada so that a new study permit can be issued to cover the rest of the length of your studies while your TRV will be still valid from your old passport

Kindly correct my information and while doing that I want you guys to answer these questions for me too.

Q1- When CIC asks your for passport for issuance of visa, What exactly do they stamp on the passport? is it a TRV (the one issued to any other person travelling to Canada) or a study permit?

Q2- How is TRV and Study permit different from each other? like the US only have a f-1 study visa (1 page document)... do we have 2 documents for Canada?

Q3- If the validity of applicant's passport is lesser than the expected length of study then will the TRV/SP (Which ever is issued in home country) still be issued till that period or beyond?

I hope I will get the best guidance here at this forum since. I really have consulted this forum like a bible for ever query that I came across in the past.

Thanks guys,

awaiting your valuable pieces of information/guidance/

if ur indian u apply for study permit/TRV
if approved u get TRV stamped on ur passport and issued a letter ...when u enter canada at port of entry u submit ur passport and the letter and will be issued a study permit which is kinda a letter which states ur status etc if u search google u will see sample study permits.(similar in the sence of I94). so now u have a visa stamped on ur passport and a study permit. ur visa and study permit will only be till the validity of ur passport if passport expires before end of study period....u will be expected to extend ur visa and study permit after u extend ur passport ..so I recommend u extend ur passport first before u apply for visa.....

While we're talking about TRV and study permit, can you explain me what will happen to my (issued) study permit if I defer my term? Does the study permit come with a validity period by which a person must travel to Canada?

The study permit comes with a validity period which you wrote in the 1294 form about the end of study period. If you defer you will have to apply for extension.

The maximum duration of my course is 3 years but it can be completed in less time than that (which i plan to finish on 2.5yrs).so i wont need extension. Right?

yep. but if you need it then it wont be a problem if you have good marks

Here is the problem, I have already applied for a study permit online with the scanned copy of my current passport,
Today they have asked me to submit the original passport through a letter stating the following:

Dear ______

This is in reference to your application for temporary residence. A decision has been made on your application. We
require your passport to finalize processing your application.
Passport requirements
• Please provide your passport or travel document, with a copy of this letter.
• There must be at least one blank page in your passport.
• Your passport must be valid for the duration of your expected length of stay in Canada.
• Please note that we cannot issue a visa beyond the expiry date on the passport.
Your passport must be received by Citizenship and Immigration Canada within 30 days from the date of this letter. Failure
to do so could result in the refusal of your application. Please ensure that a copy of this letter is included with your
passport"

my passport expires on April-2015 ... i need to renew it , but as u all know in 1 month , its not possible in Pakistan , any suggestions ...?

Your visa will be given till expiration. you will need to apply for renew before the passport expiry when you are in Canada through your embassy.

What if one already has a TRV, will they will be issued a second TRV for student visa.

TRV and study permit can be extended or renewed. They don't issue another TRV.

Also, length of new study permit will be equal to or less than new TRV.

Best of Luck.

Well I meant other way.
Like I already have a valid TRV till 2021, haven't applied for study permit yet. Maybe in August so will I be issued new TRV sticker or it will be used same??
Thanks.

OK. Thought other way around. On this matter I have no knowledge. But I think the TRV sticker will remain same and SP will be issued at POE.

Rest, confirm with other members.

Usually when you have validity on the passport the embassy grants you visa for over a certain time from the expected length of study... say 3 or 4 months or even 8 months but will that case be different if one wishes to extend the visa while in Canada, heard they only give it till the date of completion and then there won't be any time left to apply for the PR :(
