Hello guys. Have a question on the CRA tax filing. In case one of the spouse is living on a visitor visa( till OWP and PR gets processed inland) do they have to file their taxes as visitor without a SIN ? I was trying to prepare returns together, but it asks to fill the tax form for the spouse as well, bit I can't do that without a SIN and on a visitor visa.

I've also been wondering about this.
As for now I (Canadian citizen) filed my own taxes and I reported my marital status but didn't include any information about his income (which is $0 in Canada), nor did we submit anything for him. We've applied in-land and he's still waiting on his OWP.

If you are a PR holder and you were supporting your spouse while he/she is on visitor's visa, you can apply for ITR returns. I did through my accountant. He entered 000000000 as her sin. Then after filing I got a review letter from cra asking for her visitor's status Proof. Still waiting for the refund.

Hello,

I am applying for Visitor record (Extension).

Can someone confirm if we need to submit the
Schedule 1 - Application for a Temporary Resident Visa made outside Canada IMM 5257?

Thanks

@nimmau2 yes you MUST submit form IMM 5257. My extension of stay application was approved March, 2020. I found out it was Important while doing the application. Good luck

@hiwilley Thank you so much for the quick response!!

Also, how long did the process take??
You're welcome @nimmau2. I did the extension of stay online application December 31st, 2019. They requested for medical March 11th, 2020 and approved it (visitors record) on March 12th, 2020 (same day I did the medical) before the medical result came out.

Sorry...one more question @hiwilley

How long should I put the intended stay as?? Is 6 months okay?? Or should I mention less than that??

I am actually waiting for my OWP and also Spousal application is in progress

Yes @nimmau2 6months was what I applied for and was granted. You should do same even if you're expecting your work permit tomorrow or anytime soon. There's no need to seek for less than 6months since you are paying same C$100. Good luck

FYI: if your PR application is going well I don't think you need to apply for extension because you should be on implied status. I had a week before my stay expires so I did mine extension application earlier like a day after my Spousal sponsorship was received by IRCC in case my application had any error and is returned so I could still resubmit them with my OWP. If not I will not be able to resubmit with OWP after error correction which was not my case. But my application was perfect so the extension was just a back up. If you have escaped return of an error applications from IRCC then I will advise not to spend the extension money for nothing.
