Hi Michellestella,

When did you file your application?

Hi dozel, we're on both Ottawa spreadsheets, we filed June 4 2013, received June 6. Stage 1 approval followed in July, and we received a request for more info in January. According to my MP's office, we were transferred to LA in mid-March.

I'm sorry your file was transferred :( Can I ask why you applied as conjugal?

We applied conjugal because we aren't married (we might choose to in the future but it's not necessarily something we want to do) and we wouldn't have fulfilled the 1 year requirement for common law (it's a little complicated, but by the time I had found work to be able to move out of my house, we wouldn't have been able to live together for more than a year as my boyfriend's work permit was to expire and he was rejected from the PhD program he had applied to). The consultant who we hired advised us to apply as conjugal, and the friend who recommended her to me had just successfully applied as conjugal (very similar situation to us, and everything was squared away in 6 months), so it seemed like the best route for us at the time.

Interviews for conjugals are not so good, I think :s

Conjugal is the qualifying relationship of last resort with respect to CIC. They seem to really dislike it. I haven't seen official statistics, but it seems to have a high refusal rate. If there is any way that you can qualify otherwise, it would be wise to take it (particularly since CIC will reject you for conjugal if such an alternative exists).

Ordering electronic case notes (GCMS notes) is a good way of tracking the status of your application (ok, it's a terrible way, but it's the only way that CIC gives us to monitor these things). I'm sure I drove the ATIP people crazy with my requests.

Now you just have to wait a month to find out what's really happening!

How would we qualify otherwise? Would we be able to somehow convert our application to a spousal one? I had understood that we would have to start from scratch if got married while our application was processing.

I hope those case notes come soon, I would want to see their notes before making any kind of decision on changing our application, if that's even possible. My alternative would be to wait until the interview where I know I'll be rejected?? File an appeal I can't win?

I think if you have an interview just make sure you have a strong reason behind why you couldn't apply as common law/married. CIC might not just accept that you didn't want to live together in Canada or the USA if one of you couldn't work. Have a strong backup as to why you didn't get married or spend 6 months together in Canada/6 months in USA to get to be a common law couple. I think if you do plan on getting married soon you could bring evidence of that planning to the interview as well, that would certainly make your case stronger.
If you do get rejected, you most likely would win an appeal if you got married and tried again. Plus you'd have more proof, a longer relationship, and proof that you're willing to stick together through tough times and stress.

I have been wondering if there aren't any CIC agents checking this forum from time to time. They've got to be aware that it exists...i would thing. ;)

I sure hope they do! It can't have a negative impact, can it? Maybe alleviate some of their issues with our application. Dear CIC agent: you are cool. Please file our applications quickly. We will give you candy.
My username is my husbands email address that's on file, too, so it would be very easy for them to find us on here.

I hope they don't keep track of how often you check e-cas... I might look like a crazy person hahaha

When they sent me a message about my PPR, it had the following message:

This is in reference to your application for permanent residence in Canada as a member of the family class. We have now completed the initial assessment of your application, and expect to finalize your application without a personal interview. While an interview does not appear necessary at this time, we reserve the right to call you to an interview, should this become necessary at some future stage in processing.

So they reserve the right to still do one at any point still, but it itsn't likely.

Good to know! Thank you. I haven't gotten a request for my passport yet, or anything about an interview.

Do they request everyone's passport?? I thought most Americans got that waived? How did you physically send it and have you gotten it back yet? What if they ask me to send it and I need to enter Canada before it is returned??
