Does anyone here know....is it possible to land and do a reverse "flagpole"? I still have a job and apartment here in the states, so I would like to "land" first and then go back and finish my 2 weeks notice at work and time to clear out my apartment, etc. Has anyone else done that here? Is it ok to land and go back to finish up all that other business before making a complete landing? Or should I get all the other stuff done prior to landing?

Yup, totally. When you land, make sure you have your "Goods to Follow" form filled out for the stuff you will bring in later. Note that if you are coming to Ontario, they have a law where you have to be in Ontario for 153 of your first 183 days to qualify/maintain OHIP.

Canada is different from the US in that you can be a PR for some purposes (e.g., immigration) but not for others (e.g., CBSA, provincial healthcare, CRA).

If you aren't intending to immediately move to Canada for at least 12 months (ie when you flagpole) then you aren't a Settler for CBSA purposes. This is specifically outlined in CBSA Memorandum D2-2-1, where you are a visitor for CBSA purposes until you become a Settler:

Variation Between Customs/Immigration Legislation

9. A person's status for customs purposes is not always the same as their status for immigration purposes.

10. As an example, a person can become a permanent resident without the intention of residing immediately in Canada. However, this person is not determined to be a settler as defined in the customs legislation, and be eligible for the provisions of tariff item No. 9807.00.00. In this case, since the person does not have any intention of remaining in Canada at that time, and will live outside Canada for an undetermined period of time, that person is considered a non-resident of Canada and not a settler, for the purpose of the Customs Tariff, and is eligible to temporarily import goods under tariff item No. 9803.00.00.

This means, for example, that even if you are a PR for CIC purposes because you are landing, from CBSA's perspective as a visitor (since you aren't a Settler since you aren't moving for min 12 months immediately) you can legally temporarily import drive a US plated car in Canada before you move without having to import it as a Canadian resident would need to.

HI everyone, hope everyone is having a good week. I have added the 3 new people who asked to be added to the spreadsheet. Please check that your information is correct and send me a private message if it is not correct. Good luck to all, I hope we get some movement this week!!

NicAnn should have gone from green to purple on the spreadsheet and soon to be yellow :)

Could I please be added to the spreadsheet! Thank you!

Thanks OCanadia and Kessio for your replies, I don't think I'll be here THAT long (I hope) however there is no such thing (for me) as too much information ;) because lots of people read this who might not comment and yet be helped from it. 8)

Chala, Buffy is swamped with her "things to get done" but assured me she's getting to the spreadsheet soon, but thanks for looking out for me! ;) ;) :) I have SO MUCH to get done, and it's all wonderful! ;D

Congrats on PPR! I have added you to the spreadsheet but do you know the date of your sponsorship approval? It is not calculating some of the values without that date. :)

I am a newbie. Just about start the process and hopefully I can get some much needed answers.

My husband lives in USA and often visits.

1) Do we submit our application for sponsorship to the CPP-Ottawa office?
2) Can we submit as an inland application although he technically doesn't live here yet?
3) Will he be able to get an Open work permit while we are waiting for the application to be processed?
